Hellcat you say ! First off , I'm always happy to hear when youth of today show interest in muscle cars modern or classics . I'm not sure he's got the model he's referring to correct though. Hellcat is the top of the line package Dodge Challenger pumping out over 700hp. Rear wheel drive . It's an experienced drivers car in my opinion and not the best winter driver.
Brand new,the cars go for over 100,000 . This is the cheapest used one I found. View attachment 35690
Unfortunately it's a Hellcat that he has been looking at. We had a nice conversation this afternoon with the owner of the one he and his friends have been admiring for the past few months. Not sure who I want to kick more though, me for actually stopping so Minion could talk (he doesn't talk to anyone usually so yay to him for going out of his comfort zone) or the guy who owns it for telling him how awesome and cool it is to own. I just quote the yearly insurance rate and tell him he's grounded until 30 now. I am bound to win this discussion at least until he moves out on his own.

Let him buy it - you won’t have to worry about him driving at all as he will never be able to afford the insurance if he can get any.

Seriously though without you being a driver - you won’t be able to start him off as an “occasional” - so he will overpay no matter what he buys.
Do the economics for him - he could Uber everywhere he wanted to go and it would be less than annual insurance - never mind cost of car / maintenance. Get him to get his license but wait a few years to buy a vehicle :). That would be a big ask for sure but he will be “car poor” otherwise.
According to TD Insurance because I don't drive he can be insured on his own at 16, which I think is a not so bright rule but who am I to say. As to cost of insurance.... Over 15 grand a year, I'm still working on the list of all the things he could buy for that amount and trying to convince him that he still has 70 years of life to think about.

Def not a first car! Drove one a few years ago when they came out & in the middle of summer with hot rubber it was like driving on ice when you got on it...for 2wd it's effin impressive off the line & will scare the shit out of anybody in the passenger seat when you punch it at any speed...doesn't handle worth a shit on curvy roads
Can you explain to me what it is with that car that makes people of all ages and sex drool over it? The women, sad to say, I have an idea why. But what about boys and men? Don't get me wrong, I love to admire cars (mostly very old classics) but I think I've only drooled over 1 car and that was a stingray '67 or '69 not sure which year though.

9k is an insane amount of money to pay for insurance. In 3 years, you would have paid more in insurance than the cost a new Civic.

I paid around $25k for a new civic for my daughter when she turned 17 a few years ago. She was listed as secondary driver on my other 3 cars for a year prior and when we got her the Civic, the insurance with her as the principal driver was $3300/yr

if at all possible, you may want to defer the purchase and have your son set up as a secondary driver on someone else’s insurance policy to establish a history before buying a car. This will likely reduce the premium amount. I’m not suggesting you lie, but do this in a legit manner such as a grandparent or another relative.

Another avenue is to try a product such as what CAA has where you pay for the amount of distance driven - https://www.caasco.com/insurance/auto/caa-mypace. I believe some other companies may also have this type of coverage and may save you some money.
I sooooo have to look into that pay as you go insurance, only because I think I may have to get my license. At least then I know my insurance would be extremely low since I would never drive the vehicle. I do appreciate all your help though and I think my Google is now broken from filling out insurance quote requests.

It looks like you'd do anything for the 16 yr old...including spoil him with what he want even though there's a huge risk of shelling 300% on insurance...my 17 year old is buying his first car (used) he wanted it last year but I told him, save up ang buy it cash, he finally got enough $$$ to buy an 2010 acura csx for daily commute...$9k i will help him out with insurance. First thing you need is a good mechanic that will take a look at the car. You also need to look closely on the warranties attached to the vehicle...these used car salesman can be tricky at times...I wouldn't give a 16 yr old a sports car....if it was me...it's like giving a 16 yr old a gun...
I'm the meanie Mom, spoiling him is not in either his or my best interest. I was willing to go halvsies on a reasonable car as most parents do. Reasonable to me though is used, under 3000 and a somewhat fixer upper so he can work on it and learn to respect the car. The Spoiler is the Gramma who now lives on the west coast. I try to instill in the Minion that if you want something you work for it, and while he is under my rule he must put half his money in the bank and not touch it until he figures out what he wants to do in life. Trust me I don't spoil him much to his dismay.

If you trully want a compromise between safety and reliability, but something cool and fun to drive - consider Subaru Impreza.

It won't break your bank to buy, maintain or to insure.

Depending on a trim level, car will look awesome and very sporty. It's full time AWD with low center of gravity so it's glued to the road.

If I was a teenager again - I'd love for it to be my first ride.
I looked into that Subaru and that may be a me sized car. Plus I kinda like it.. actually I kinda like a lot of the Subaru vehicles. I may keep this option for me if that's okay :)

Ummm a 700hp Hellcat is definitely NOT a car for a 16 yr old.

I’d go with a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic as they are usually quite reliable and will last many years.
This kid is supposed to be our future and he doesn't want electric, or at least hybrid? Does he want Dodge to bring back the 426 hemi for him as well  (n)...

What does Gramma drive these days?

How did he narrow it down to the Hellcat ?
What year was the one he looked at? How many Km on it?
Be careful buying any used car but especially a muscle car, I find they were either babied or abused.
The last thing you want is to find the head gasket is blown or any other major repair after you buy it .I'd stay away from buying privately .

I would recommend the impreza over a hellcat, specially for a kid. Very reliable car specially in snow. The car is AWD and still stylish.

It is more of an "ego" car...would I drive it if somebody hands me the key? Hell sure I'd drive it...I've driven a '67 mustang and it feels good, it looks good, heck it sounds good too...it was my brother in laws car...it only shows up on summer. but if it's out of my pocket car? I'd pick up an STI manual...that is my ego car...but back to your son...you know what to do...get him something he can play with, drive, tear it and won't be hell on your pocket...for a 16 year old.. my pick would either be Acura, VW or Subaru, I'd put Honda on that list too...

There is one up from the hellcat, was it called demon? It’s a special edition and came with 900 horses.
I know from experience it’s easy to crash a car with too much power. I had 600hp camaro and in heavy rain, it met the guardrail front first then spun to hit back as well. I still miss Crystal :(

Reposted as a reference.

Shame on Dodge for airing this commercial! Everybody knows that teenage drivers don't need any encouragement to do stupid things in their cars, whether they be mild sedans or hot supercars.

Why didn't they "triple down" and have the way underage drivers smoking dope and drinking beer in the Hellcats while they were at it?

Yup. The Dodge Challenger Demon was manufactured in our very own Brampton! It was available with full trim as a super hot regular car, and in a special drag race version.

Copy & Paste from Car & Driver mag:

"Overview
The Challenger SRT Demon is even mightier than the Hellcat version, boasting up to 840 horsepower and exclusive drag-racing equipment. Did we mention that it can do a wheelie, too? While the limited-edition Demon went out of production after the 2018 model year, it remains one of the coolest and craziest cars to ever wear a Dodge badge. Many of its engine and transmission goodies are now available on the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye. Still, even the most powerful pony-car competitors, such as the 650-hp Chevy Camaro ZL1 and the all-new 700-plus-horsepower Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, will be hard-pressed to match the straight-line acceleration of the Demon.
Engines, Ride, and Handling
The heart of this demonic Challenger is its 808-hp supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V-8. Wait, didn't we already say it makes 840 horsepower? That is correct, but only when the gas tank is filled with 100-plus-octane race fuel and the $1 Demon Crate package is added, which includes a special engine controller that helps unlock the engine's full potential. Add—or should we say subtract—numerous interior pieces to make it lighter, along with the many other weight-saving methods, and Dodge claims the Demon can cover the quarter-mile in 9.65 seconds at 140 mph. What does that mean? It's (expletive) fast, that's what.
While we haven't tested one at our test track, we've driven it at the drag strip and confirmed its gut-punch takeoffs. Of course, that performance requires more than just big horsepower and torque numbers. Every Demon has a host of specialized upgrades that we've covered in-depth. Highlights include adjustable dampers that help transfer the weight rearward during takeoffs. The standard eight-speed automatic transmission has a trans brake that helps launch the car harder, along with other enhancements. A set of standard supersticky tires are stuffed under its four flared fenders while a pair of 4.5-inch-wide front wheels are included in the Demon Crate—tires sold separately. Although this drag-racing special was never meant for twisting tracks or winding roads, it can be driven comfortably to cruise nights and car shows. Just don't accidentally mistake the right pedal for the left.

The Last Challenger SRT Demon Is Built

Interior and Technology
Inside, the Demon's design resembles every other Dodge Challenger model. This version, however, can be stripped down by removing the passenger-side and rear seats and swapping some luxury amenities, such as the power-adjustable steering wheel and complex audio system, for simpler alternatives. However, those who want to keep the seats so they can take their passengers for hell rides can have them added back in for just $1. The sound system and several other creature comforts—such as a power sunroof, heated steering wheel, and heated and ventilated front seats—can also be added for those who opt for the tamer package.

Growing up in the burb’s a car was a necessity and a right of passage when you turned of age.
I asked a friends teenage kids if they were excited about getting their license and driving.
Both girls, 1said she wants a self driving car , the other said it’s a waste of money and pointless when living in the city. Girls are smarter than boys .
