45 Richest Canadians Are Now Wealthier Than The Economies of Half of Canada’s Provinces and Territories

Canada’s billionaire class sees its pile of money grow even bigger

November 13, 2019

Canada’s billionaires now control more wealth than the economies of four Canadian provinces and three territories combined.

According to an annual “billionaires insights” report from Swiss wealth management firm UBS, Canada’s 45 billionaires saw their wealth rise to $153.1 billion in 2018 — that’s up 3% from 148.5 billion in 2017.

To put those numbers into context, figures from Statistics Canada show Canada’s 45 billionaires have a pile of wealth that’s bigger than the GDP of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador combined ($112.2 billion).

That’s also bigger than the GDP of Nunavut, Yukon and the Northwest Territories combined ($10.5 billion).

Even the economies of Manitoba ($67.4 billion) and Saskatchewan ($86.6 billion) pale in comparison to the collective wealth Canada’s 45 richest people.

Although the raw number of Canadian billionaires dropped from 46 to 45 in 2018 due to the passing of mining baron Peter Munk, Canada’s billionaire class nonetheless saw its collective wealth increase by $4.6 billion.

Many Canadian workers were not so fortunate during the same period.

Although Canadian billionaires saw their collective wealth rise 3% between 2017 and 2018, Canadian workers saw their collective wages rise only 1.9%, although a closer look at those numbers suggest regional factors are at play — Calgary and Edmonton saw wages increased between 0.6% and o.7% during the same period.

According to Canada’s Parliamentary Budget Officer, a 1% tax on net wealth above $20 million alone would generate nearly $70 billion in new revenue over 10 years.

Experts note that revenues at that scale would be enough to cover the costs of major programs like pharmacare, postsecondary education, affordable housing and other investments that would further reduce the costs of living for working Canadians.

Lets hope the NDP can put some pressure on Trudeau.
For what? They will just move their money somewhere else to avoid the tax, plus Trudeau won't do it, half if not more of these billionaires are donors to the Liberal party and the other half are to the Cons

That's nice.
Why do people assume rich people are rich because somehow they were the "chosen ones" or something? Maybe they earned it? Maybe they worked hard, made good decisions and earned it?
And why the need to punish them by making them pay more than their fair share of taxes?

So since you think nothing will change if its implemented I assume that means you also would have no issue with taxing the rich when it comes up.

Taxing the rich will solve all of our problems with inequality. Ask New York state how that worked out.

Nope I don't have an issue with it. You can just add one more failed policy to Trudeau's resume.

Yet he is still PM, isn't he? Deal with it.
Yup only because the other choices were worse, not because of anything he did well. He did so well he lost his majority, at least now there will be a check on policies he wants to implement.

At least now there will be more pressure from the left with the Bloc and the NDP.

Then you must have supported his re-election. You just admitted that he was the best option. Checkmate.
Wrong again I spoiled my ballot. I didn't vote for anyone. Speaking of checkmate, I made you look bad on the Strombo issue we discussed. I'm really surprised you were so adamant about your position. It was easy to look up. Like I said most of your posts lack any facts, you're either lazy or not that smart. You still didn't admit you were wrong.

Because, I was not wrong, you were wrong.

Let me recap. You stated more than once that Stefanopoulous did this and that and why he was so bad trying to be the new hip host of HNIC.. I quoted your posts and said that they were wrong. I did not state why. But they were wrong because Stefanopoulous was never on HNIC, it was Strombolopoulous. You need to get your facts right.

You need to admit that your statements were factually incorrect because you named the wrong person. Or should I find them and repost them?

BTW, I will grant you that if you voted for no one, that is a legitimate out. I have you dead to rights on this one, though.

I had the name wrong, I admit it. It was Strombolopolous not Steafanopolous but you knew who I was talking about, My theory as to why McLean was replaced was correct, so at that point you were just trolling me which seems to be a hobby of yours. Why didn't you correct me? You like to make people look bad and insult them. The only reason I could come up with is that you enjoy trolling, at least with me you do.

Can somebody point me towards a country or society, even a religion that is ideal from leftist point of view. Is it all just grievance or is there something you can point to as a becon to strive towards, surely there somewhere.

Ive laid out examples of socialist societies that thrive, but in the best of cases, human rights are sacrificed, for the better of society. And as I pointed out they only thrive when they are able to sell goods or services to a capitalistic society.

By the sounds of what I read on this board, Canada is just not acceptable, as we are socialist. The government demands more than half of our money than we earn in taxes. That is socialism. And its only getting worse with all those scummy little hockey players and there ever dreaming 100 million dollar contract parents.

Ive made the case for Saudi Arabia, you are giving up an extreme about of human rights, however it is as close to "everything free utopia", that I know of. Google homelessness in Saudi Arabia. it only exists for a couple dozen opiate addicts that haven't been rounded up and put in jail yet.

I can sometimes nitpick. But at the same time, I try very hard to be accurate in what I post. Say what you mean and mean what you say. I always proof read my posts prior to posting and do lots of editing as well if I need to improve a post.
