So sad. R.I.P.

The early speculation last night was that the little girl had somehow wandered down to the tracks by herself.

This is one tragic example of negligent parents.
Now add to this list all the stupid crap teens do and get away without parent discipline.
I cannot imagine the agony these parents have to endure the rest of their lives.
That is the worst punishment than being charged in court and thrown in jail.
Just a sad day for me.

I just heard about this on the news. So very sad. Yes, it was stupid and unnecessary. Apparently from what I've read the tracks are used as as a shortcut by many people in the area who don't seem to grasp how dangerous it could be. Poor little girl.
They used the excuse of lack of fencing, that no excuse at all. The parents have no commen sense, they know the dangers of taking that shortcut

I feel horrible for the family, but also for the engineer of the train. There is literally nothing they can do in a situation like that. And I've heard that it isn't a question of "if" an engineer will see shit like that....but more of a question of "when." Poor bastard.

There is nothing wrong in crossing a rail track if you are positive there is no train coming in either direction.
Anyone who drives a car and comes to a stop sign, looks in both directions and then proceeds.
Too late to discuss the what if scenarios now, its too late to turn the clock back.

As an elementary school student, I had to cross the same set of tracks 4 times a day for 8 school years.
I do think that I can say I was not fatally injured by any of the many trains.

If they were crossing at a grade/level crossing most of the real estate is Rail Company [private] property.

I fully understand that the warning devices are NOT fail-safe and it is the USERS responsibility for their own safety.

There is more here than you think.

I agree with you that they "knew" the danger. Everyone knows the danger. But everyone also assumes that they'll be fine. The dangerous things only happen to other people. I live in a rural community well north of Toronto. One part of it is bi-sected by train tracks. If you want to walk from say Street A to Street B it would be a lot faster to just walk along the tracks rather than up Street A to Street C and then along Street C to Street B and then back down Street B - so a lot of people walk along the tracks. I think they're crazy but they probably figure it's only about a minute walk so it will be ok. Because we always assume the dangerous thing isn't going to happen to us.

I'm sure the parents realize what a stupid thing it was to take this short cut and I'm sure that this will haunt them for the rest of their lives. They'll never forgive themselves. It's going to be a never-ending living nightmare; a prison of their own making.
People also like to wear headphones/ear buds and can't hear trains coming.
Stupidity will never end.

Apparently it doesn't even take headphones though. I still find it hard to imagine, but they say sometimes they can really sneak up on you. Maybe if its a part of the track where the acoustics are strange or the train noise is blending in with other stuff. I don't really get it, but I have heard of accidents or near misses where people say somehow they didn't hear it until the last seconds.

Looks like they will have to fence off that area.
