First media reports all mentioned Cube nightclub. Regrettably I can't give you a link on this.

The Toronto Sun quote appeared in this opinion column, published on July 7:

Thank you. Here are some interesting quotes:

One such shooting unfolded in city’s busy Entertainment District over a violent Canada Day weekend claiming the lives of Jahvante “Smoke Dawg” Smart, 21, and Ernest “Koba Prime” Modekwe, 28.Multiple sources claim it was a shootout and Smoke Dawg — a suspected member of Regent Park’s Halal Gang and the latest of rapper Drake’s pals to be involved in gun violence — actually opened fire first. He also still had a gun on him when he arrived at the hospital
Of 52 homicides in this city so far this year, 23 victims were black (44.2%). That number jumps to 55% when the 10 victims of the Yonge St. van attack is excluded. And alarmingly, of the 25 victims killed by guns in the first half of this year, 17 were black — 16 men and one woman accounting for 68% of all victims murdered by a gun. Those are frightening statistics from a community that represents just 9% of Toronto residents, according to Statistics Canada.

Here is an interesting item about Smoke Dawg from a July 2 Globe & Mail article:

Smart’s family released a statement Sunday saying that he leaves behind a one-year-old daughter and 13 siblings.

“As a young man from Regent Park, he overcame poverty and grew into a responsible caring grown man who took care of his friends and family,” the statement said. “He helped people wherever he could and will be remembered for his huge smile and glowing personality.”

21 years old and he's already fathered a one-year old kid, despite seeing first-hand the results of irresponsible and careless breeding. Black Lives Matter indeed. Probably a good thing this guy was removed from the gene pool.

anywhere i want;)
who cares they said he overcame poverty - what do you think they are referring to ? Ive never seen so many people so judgemental -its actually disturbing. The fact that its been over a week and you guys haven't let this thread die out yet shows how judgemental you guys are. I mean everybody has flaws - we are not perfect ; that's a fact - anyone who thinks otherwise needs a reality check. It doesn't matter what the shooing victims have done ; the point is that their families are suffering & underneath all the bullshit provided by the media they were good people who helped their friends and families when they needed to.

Sweetiepie, I think you're missing the main message that (I think) most Terbites are trying to convey.

Very few people could give a rats as how many guys deal drugs or are in gangs. I personally could care less.
Where people get pissed off is when gangbangers start shooting their pistols in very crowded neighborhoods in which innocent people can die.
(Jane Creba??)

If you got a problem with your homeys inside your "hood", just wait till the fucker gets home and THEN blow a cap in his ass.
Why do it in a crowed street where innocent people can get hurt (or die)??

I dunno, just my $ 0.02 worth

Yes we all have flaws but these people have serious social pathologies that cannot be dismissed.

How do you know this? He had 13 siblings so I doubt that they or his mother are wallowing in grief. As for his daughter, odds are that he was providing no financial or emotional support.

Drugs is why so many gangs exist and why they have power. If drug laws changed, so would the power and number of gangs.
Not to mentoin organized crime guys are the ones flooding the streets with guns and drugs and nobody is criticizing them.
The only reason people are making an issue out of this is because the media ran with the story and made it into an epidemic.

I agree that they should not be shooting up in crowded streets - as ive said before I do not condone gun violence. However if the terbites could care less about gangbangers than how come this thread is six pages long? if you read the whole thread you would see several members were trying to insinuate that all gangs are made up of young black males ages 16-40. In my opinion that is a stereotype & not 100% true because gangs can have many different members of different ages and ethnic groups. I was just trying to say that we should not judge only one demographic group.

Yes we all have flaws but these people have serious social pathologies that cannot be dismissed.

It says in the article " he helped out his mother whenever he could" . Did you not read the article? Or are you just judging based off what people are saying in this threads

Newsflash - Drug laws are changing ( marijuana is becoming legal ) & gun laws are changing. If you guys want to judge one ethnic group based off what you see in the media ; go ahead - I want no more part of this conversation. Would you rather judge people based off what you see ? or actually stop and think " hey- maybe theres more to the story; maybe he was a good guy caught up in a bad situation? " .

To be honest I don't think any of you guy are capable of thinking like that because you guys are so busy believing everything shown on your tv screen ; when everyone knows the news only shows what they want people to see. I guess that's what happens to society when racist people like Donald trump & doug ford are elected into office. Its sad to see how you guys give shit to people for being racist but yet promote it.

Like I said - ive stated my opinion. You guys can agree or disagree but I will not keep arguing my point. In case you guys missed the main point I was trying to make its we should not judge someone / one ethnic group based off of what we see in the media!
