I figured I'd start a thread on 2008 baseball stories, other than the Blue Jays. I post a lot and don't want to hijack the Jays thread all the time.

First story as I already mentioned (sorry to repeat myself)........... Curt Schilling has shoulder problems already. This opens the door now for Clay Buchholz to fit into the 5 man rotation.

Can't wait to get it going. Feb 14th for Sox pitchers and catchers to report. I for one, wish they were not opening up early in Japan. Their spring training season will be shortened by several days, hopefully it won't affect how the pitchers get themselves ready. Stupid schedule sees them play 2 in Japan then back to LA for spring training games against the Dodgers, then they start the season again.

Just found another story in the Boston Herald...............

Never a dull moment for Red Sox fans ............

Eric Hinske .........

signs a minor league contract with Tampa Bay with an invitation to spring training. Not a significant story, but anyone who has seen Tampa Bay home games on tv may find this a little funny.

There is a heckler that sits at field level between home plate and one of the dugouts. You can hear him in the background on Jays telecasts. Well for years, Hinske was one of his favourite targets. Just thinking, now he will have 81 opportunities to crack on him.

Red Sox have signed Bartolo Colon to a minor league deal. I think there was some confusion surrounding his signing though. Red Sox said they would like him to eat up about 200 innings. Colon thought Theo said he wants him to eat during about 200 innings.

If he gets anywhere near to where he was a few years ago (2005 Cy Young winner), he could be a help now that Schilling is out and may be done. I also don't think Sox have to worry about Coco Crisp being disgruntled about not playing much this year. Colon would just eat him and that solves that problem.

I do think this is the year the Yanks may finish 3rd ...
Been reading on the Boston sites that they expect Blue Jays to be a real dark horse this year. They have played Boston tough the last few seasons and they open up at home vs. Sox. That is after that stupid 20 hour road trip to Japan.

Tampa is going to be much improved, however, Kazmir has elbow problems and will miss a few weeks. They lose him for any length of time during the season, it will hurt them.

Red Sox - Jays today.... maybe not!!!

Anyone expecting to see the spring training game on Sporstnet today may end up seeing a few more hands of Poker instead........ Sox are threatening to boycott the game as well as the entire Japan trip.

Lowell: We won't go to Japan if coaches don't get paid

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff March 19, 2008 10:15 AM

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell confirmed to the Globe’s Jackie MacMullan that the team voted unanimously this morning not to make the scheduled trip to Japan or play its final spring training game against Toronto this afternoon unless the coaches, training staff, and equipment staff were going to be compensated for making the trip to Japan.

''When we voted to go to Japan, that was not a unanimous vote,'' said Lowell, "but we did what our team wanted us to do for Major League Baseball. They promised us the moon and the stars and then when we committed, they started pulling back. It's not just the coaches, it's the staff, the trainers, a lot of people are affected by this.

"I'm so super proud of this team, when we put it to a vote it was unanimous, we're all in agreement that we're not going to put up with this.''

Manager Terry Francona and his players were extremely irked after learning the team's coaches were not going to get the $40,000 stipend they assumed they’d be getting for making the trip to Japan (players will also receive a payment). Francona had informed the coaches they’d be getting the stipend.

However, the Sox manager was told by members of the Oakland coaching staff that they were not being paid. Francona had thought it was unusual that one team’s staff would be paid and the other not. So he checked into it and found he and his coaches were getting nothing.

The Red Sox are scheduled to leave Fort Myers after today’s scheduled Grapefruit League finale against the Blue Jays (12:05 p.m.), but now it appears both the game and the flight are somewhat in question.

"That's one of the things we've been talking about," David Ortiz said of the potential Japan boycott. "It's really [expletive] up."

The scene here in Florida is an odd one, for sure. There have been conversations going on about the issue among the Red Sox staff, including one between Lowell and Francona and between Lowell and Theo Epstein. Meanwhile, there are a couple hundred suitcases outside the locker room being tagged and weighed for the trip to Japan.

Francona said he doesn't care about himself but that in some cases the $40,000 represents some two-fifths of a coach’s salary. The Red Sox are scheduled to face the Oakland Athletics in two season-opening games in Tokyo on March 25 and 26.

Sox win in Japan.....

freaking nail biter to open the 2008 season.

Dice-K being Dice-K with 2 horrific innings, then settles down, leaves with Sox winning.
Manny being Manny with 4 huge RBI.
Another Sox rookie comes up big with 2 RBI (including a HR) - not Ellsbury, but Brandon Moss.
Papelbon saves after a rough inning.

1 down - 161 to go .........;)

the travelling circus comes to LA next!!!!!

It's bad enough the Sox (and A's) had to make this ridiculous trip to play 2 games in Japan, now they hopped on a plane to fly to LA for 3 ex. games against the Dodgers. So far it sounds moderately okay - right? Well they play Friday night at Dodger Stadium, then the circus heads for that grand ole ball park the LA Coliseum where 115,000 people are expected.

Now the kicker, it is 178 feet down the left field line where there is a freaking 60 foot wall (nearly twice as high as the Green Monster). Nothing like getting your team ready for the season by playing in half of a Little League park. Man, this game will never end, everyone will want to tatoo that wall. How will they evaluate the pitchers? Whoever allows the least amount of balls off the wall makes the rotation? Maybe they can really make this a fun event, like Pros vs. Joes. Baseball game, roll out the goalposts for a kicking contest and finish with a relay race around the old track.

Break up the Royals ............

KC just completed a three game road sweep of the Tigers. Two nice pitching performances by Brian Bannister and Zack Greinke on consecutive days. I like that Alex Gordon at 3B. Might be a fairly decent season for the Royals.

Sox in Toronto this weekend. Jays always play Boston tough. Wakefield Friday, Buccholz Saturday and nice match up Sunday - Beckett vs. Doc. Hope to catch at least 2 games at Rogers.

They always seem to play the Sox and Yanks tough and then crap out against the weaker teams. I think Doc is trying to get them to play all the games with more purpose and intensity this year. I watched last night's game with the Yanks as if it were a playoff game.

Hopefully now that Boston is finally back in the Eastern Time Zone, their bats won't be 3-4 innings behind like they were in every game against Oakland. Anyone at Rogers on the weekend, look way up in the 500 level. The first sign of trouble and you may see some of us Sox fans climbing out on the ledge. :p

Wakefield is always 50-50 at best and Buchholz has had a terrible spring so I may wait til Beckett goes on Sunday before I show up.

Note to A-Rod.... you're not welcome at Fenway

Rude greeting for another A-Rod

Posted by Eric Wilbur, Boston.com Staff April 3, 2008 10:14 PM

As if today’s hawk attack at Fenway Park weren’t bizarre enough, how’s this for synergy?

The victim’s name: A-Rod.

As in Alexa Rodriguez.

The Memorial Boulevard Middle School student, who was taking a tour of the park with her class, also happens to be 13, which just also happens to be Alex Rodriguez’s number with the Yankees.

It's up for debate as to which A-Rod receives a ruder welcome at Fenway this season.

Never thought i would see that happen this year let alone against the tigers and opening week.
Make that an 0-4 start for the Tigers. They lost at home again today to ChiSox. They go to Boston next week, they oughta be more than ready for a breakout - look out Sox
