Toward the end of his life an antidote was developed that significantly slowed acromegaly. Paul Wight (The Big Show) took it, Andre did not. If figured the damage had been done, he lived just over a year after that.

Acromegaly affect the body in different ways, Paul Wight would not have gotten as tall as Andre, he was well on his way to being heavier. Rondo Hatton made his name as a psycho in Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes franchise. He was known as The Creeper, he developed acromegaly after being wounded in WW I. He passed away at age 51.
