Lance was the son of Woolworth's Department Store heiress Barbara Hutton, and he was married to actress Jill St John from 1960-62. He qualified 16th in his only Formula One race for the Scarab F1 racing team, (with Scarab 2.5 L4 engine), at the 1960 Belgian Grand Prix, retiring on the first lap with engine failure.
