Tradition gone: 'Hockey Night in Canada' NHL broadcasts won't return to CBC next fall

"In a separate statement, the CBC said it plans to launch a new Saturday night prime-time show that will "highlight Canada's athletes as they compete at home and around the world."

Specifics on the programming for the time-slot weren't available, but the network plans to showcase the upcoming Commonwealth Games, women's professional leagues and more than 20 major world championships
.".

I'm sure that rural pensioners who watch a TV with rabbit ears are going to stay up past 9 PM to watch women's professional league sports.

Well, Rogers bought the right to broadcast NHL games, they are now going to price gouge, cable and streaming, no more free Saturday night hockey games on TV. And Pee Pee is salivating at the prospect of CBC being gone for good. HNIC is their number one ratings program.

Well, well, well.

CBC's Hockey Night in Canada to return with Professional Women's Hockey League games
Who wants to watch female doctors, lawyers and accountants play hockey? I could foresee a larger male audience if the league was for the kind of 'Pros ' who advertise on this board.

I have season tickets.
Great atmosphere, fun games, way better price than the Habs.

Give the ridiculous amounts that Rogers is paying for its national NHL contracts, I'm not sure if I want a funded broadcaster involved in the NHL game.

Not sure if they will recover there costs with ad revenue from the PWHL, but the risk of significant loss is inherently much lower.

@Valcazar: You misunderstood my reply. (See bold formatting in the text version of your link from the first quote in this post).

I was riffing on how Professional Women's hockey would differ from Women's Professional hockey.

One would not necessarily expect Professional Women, (ie: women with highly skilled 'white collar' vocations), to also excel in ice hockey as a side gig to the extent that their games would warrant National television coverage.

I don't doubt that watching a reasonably priced sporting event live between reasonably matched teams is an excellent entertainment option, but the quoted post is intentionally off topic. This thread is about televised sports.

Imagine that it's Saturday night, one is at home, and one's only spectator entertainment source is television. The television only receives two stations. The choice is between watching men play in an NHL game, or watching women play in a PWHL game. A large majority of the viewing audience would be male, if only because most women would likely choose a different activity than watching a hockey game, (reading, talking on the telephone, sewing, knitting, cleaning the cat box, etc.).

Given those two television viewing options, which percentage of the total viewing audience would chose to watch the PWHL game? I'm guessing perhaps 5%.

This isn't a question about the merits of women's professional sports. It's entirely about market share for counter-programming. The number of viewers who would tune in to watch Women's hockey during the Olympics is irrelevant. Millions of people watch swimming races during the Olympics on television. Hundreds of people watch swimming races on television between Olympiads.

It's time to start boycotting the streaming services. They are paying stupid money for broadcast rights, player contracts are going stratospheric, and the costs are being dumped on consumers. The cost of some individual streaming services is now over 50% of the cost of an entire cable subscription not that long ago, not to mention increased internet costs. In the end, we are being gouged so that some kid can get paid $18 million a year to play a game and wealthy shareholders laugh all the way to the bank. I'll be just fine without hockey thanks.

Wouldn't you be better off boycotting cable television? They still pay the lion's share of the TV rights $$.

I accepted an offer on mlb(dot)com for a reduced price for baseball streaming. I'd never do that again. The video quality was poor, and I could only watch out-of market games.

This was some years ago, and the video quality has likely improved, but the local market blackout applied to both home and road games for Toronto.

I had subscribed only for the last month or so of the season, kind of like buying leafs tickets from a scalper after the first period. My major objection to the service was that it was automatically renewed for the next season at full season price, during spring training!

I noticed right away, and had the service cancelled, but beware of scams like that. Many people may be paying for a streaming subscription the don't watch because they forgot they have it.

I download F1 races sometimes, but I don't have time to watch live sports much anymore.

I'm not holding my breath waiting for Rollerball anymore. According to the 1975 movie, that was an established league in 2018. 'Not too distant future', my ass. Maybe it's because the Russian league in the early 2000's didn't last. Bastards.

Watched it as a kid only. The players look so young these days.
Never played ice hockey, only ball hockey.
Wanted a Northland goalie stick. Not sure if I got one. Hard to find.
Got any Bernie Parent cards?

I played a lot of ball hockey against some excellent ball hockey players in the mid 1970's. One of them would later become the uncle of Marc-Edouard Vlasic, who played 19 seasons in the NHL. The uncle, John, was a friend of mine, the same age as me, but one year behind in school, not because he was slow, but because I skipped kindergarden.

I was often the last player picked, but it wasn't because I sucked and was invited only because I had a net. I was a better player than most of the guys who weren't invited to play. Some guys were good players, but not invited because they had a reputation for not showing up for games after they said they would.
