Alleged Killer of Charlie Kirk ‘Deeply Indoctrinated with Leftist Ideology,’ Utah Governor Says
Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin was “deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology,” according to Utah Governor
Spencer Cox (R).
In an
interview with
The Wall Street Journal this week, Cox said it’s become “very clear to us and investigators” that
Tyler Robinson, the suspected Kirk
shooter, was “indoctrinated with leftist ideology.” According to the
Journal’s report on Robinson, his parents are registered Republicans while he “was in the past registered as nonpartisan.”
Cox has said that family members described 22-year-old Robinson as becoming more political in recent years. The percentage of the young man’s life spent online also reportedly increased dramatically leading up to the shooting.
Cox previously
described Kirk’s killing as clearly a “political assassination.”
Kirk, a 31-year-old conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed on Wednesday during an event at Utah Valley University. According to Cox, Robinson and a family member discussed attending the event at a dinner.
“They talked about why they didn’t like him and the viewpoints that he had,” the governor said on Friday.
Debate around Kirk’s suspected shooter’s motivations and politics has become heated as more and more details emerge. The Guardian
removed quotes from an article about Robinson this week that identified him as the only “leftist” in his family. The anonymous source who provided the quotes called themselves a high school friend, but questioned their recollections after the article was published.
“Charlie said, ‘When people stop talking, that’s when you get violence. He said the weak can never forgive, forgiveness is attribute of the strong, the only way out of the labyrinth of suffering is to forgive,” Cox
said this week at a press conference about the killing. ‘Welcome without judgement, love without condition, forgive without limit.'”
