Honestly, I'm not surprised in the least.

Here's why.

I used to work for a union, and the union, of course, endorsed the NDP because they're the most pro-labour political party.

Naturally, most union members supported the NDP. But many of the union members definitely ONLY voted NDP because of their pro-Labour, pro-working-class stance. They saw it as being in their financial best interest. Many of these folks were uneducated and, to be honest, quite intellectually dim. While they may have been pro-labour, many were as socially conservative as it gets.

Think of the character Archie Bunker from All in the Family. He was pro-union, pro-going-on-strike to stick it to the company, as he did in some episodes, but he was also a bigoted warmonger who loved Richard Nixon.
