Trump wants to achieve his goal of a new trade agreement by the end of this year, before the mid-term. Did anyone see Lutnick yesterday ranting about the great things to come, the jobs and manufacturing, It sounded like car plants would be up and running overnight. Everyone not in the MAGA cult recognizes this disaster. It's like a sick person cutting off a healthy limb because they think it'll re-grow...Anyone who is retired or planning to retire just took a face full of shit. Trillions wiped out of the market because of mango mussolini. And, you can bet a lot of his insiders and savvy market folks are probably going to make billions by shorting the market, or at least key stocks.
The long-term impact of this is going to make the US an outsider...unless immediate change happens. I mean, what foreign company will want to do business in an environment like that, full of chaos and stupidity? What country will enter into a trade agreement with Trump when he can easily (apparently) go against it using "emergency powers?" I think we're going to see a lot of countries band together and avoid the US market entirely. I mean, these tariffs got Japan, China and South Korea to enter into a trade deal, three countries that historically have hated each other....
And, in Canada, it has unified the majority of us. Hell, it might even cause BC and Quebec to allow pipelines to the coasts, allowing Alberta oil to bypass the US entirely. While there are major roadblocks facing this move (from the Indigenous population and provincial governments), it could be an important step. And, let's see the removal of inter-provincial trade barriers. I honestly like the idea of increasing exports to other markets. Canada got lazy focusing on the world's largest economy, because it was easy and close. This is no longer the case (specifically, the ease). We'll do more business in Europe and maybe China/India.
The impact of all of this is likely a diminished US. They shat upon allies and treaties, and blew up any good will they've spent the last 80 years developing (well, it was always a little tarnished). I mean, USAid might have been expensive, but it was an incredible tool of soft power that helped millions. Now, they're going to ensure other powers, like China, come to the rescue...
