Florida last 4 games has given up a grand total of 1 goal and that was to TB.
They play Boston tonight then Leafs on Thursday.
Florida last game of the schedule is against TB.
Could be a game that decides who plays the Leafs.

This is probably a preview of what the playoffs will look like.
Leafs unable to score on the PP and unable to kill penalties effectively.

Ottawa has won 5 in a row. They've separated themselves from the other wild card teams.
Should be a slam dunk to make the playoffs unless the wheels fall off.
Now only 4 pts behind TB and 6 behind the Leafs.
Leafs have lost the previous 2 games to Ottawa having scored a grand total of 1 goal.
They play next.

All these trash Marner types what do you have to say about Matthews? He's not playing to his usual caliber with 23 goals and 56 points in 50 games. His hits are down and his shots on goal are slightly down. Perhaps he's playing injured or maybe, just maybe, he's saving it up for the playoffs.
I still think we have a problem with forward depth, Kampf is horrible. Lorentz had a good start to the season but he's faded. Domi has looked a bit better recently though while Jarnkrok likely won't be back to form for a few more weeks. Nick Robertson has been a huge disappointment.

According to moneypuck Leafs are 99.6% to make the playoffs. Ottawa is 92.3%
Leafs winning the 1st round is 41.3%
2% to win the cup. Florida is favourite at 18.6%

I was going to post about Matthews.

His season stats are obviously skewed because of games missed due to injury as well as playing through injury earlier. I imagine he's pretty much fully healthy now.

I don't see the dominance that he's previously routinely shown. The pucks are not going in from every possible angle as they used to. I'm thinking that his days of insane scoring are a thing of the past. We may see an occasional 50 goal season but not much more. He may have hit his goal scoring peak and is starting the downside.

Don't get me wrong. I believe that he is still an elite talent with his skating, puckhandling, size and defensive play but it's mainly the goal scoring that I see slowing down for him.

I tend to agree, he’s not as fast, not as physically engaged and seems to need a lot more time for his booboos to heal.
His on ice presence has disappeared this season.
Can he comeback?

In addition to his injury, I think one of Matthews problems is opposing teams are simply sticking closer to him in the offensive zone. He doesn't seem to have the same amount of room to move around as he used to.

The measure of any of the core players is in the playoffs.
We already know what they're capable of in the regular season.
A great regular season means nothing without playoff success.
Last season Matthews pushed himself late in the season to hit 70 goals.
He subsequently missed 2 playoff games and they lost in 7.

Leafs are now the heaviest team in the League.
They went after Rantanen, another big player and a proven playoff performer.
The last 7 cup winners were predominantly big heavy teams.
Florida was middle of the pack but they hit and were mean and nasty.

i remember some people in this thread calling Matthews and or Marner, the greatest LEAF ever to wear the sweater. not so much now huh  . matthews doesent score 69 this year . half of you are bitching and whining. this guy could score 50 for the next 5 years and you,d still be upset. either one i,d take on my team anyday.the leafs will come to see signing #88 to that contract , will come back to haunt them. just MHO. watch out for BRADY tonite;).

As @superstar_88 , said so well upthread, it's all about the Leafs playoff success, which has generally been non-existent!! IMHO, if the Leafs lose in the 1st round of the playoffs this year, then the Leafs won't be signing Mitch Marner to the "monster" contract that he so desires to remain a Leaf!!
I don't disagree, the problem is the Leafs needs an alternative. Their top draft picks are gone, and one of their top prospects is gone. The next biggest free agent at the end of the year is Sam Bennett. The biggest free agent center in the summer might be John Tavares.
