Interesting observations in the past week by a couple of retired Secretaries of State that previous US strategy of non-proliferation of nukes early on was to comfort West Germany, Japan and South Korea that they did not need to develop their own weapons. Probably would not take too long for any of them with their technology to do so but putting the brains, the tech, the public will, and the money together by Canada would be more challenging......

So, as I suggested, the first step is to cancel F35 order. In a conflict, US would pull a switch.
The Swedish Grippen was the potential alternative approved by DoD if I recall correctly. Cheaper, less advanced. Now that the training has already begun for RCAF on the chosen option, it won't be too easy to pull a mid-river changing of horses....

There is only the delivery problem we would have with nukes.
They are very heavy bombs, and you need a capable plane to drop them
The W76 is only 800 KG and can yield 100KT. Of course its unlikely that Canada can build nukes of this size and sophistication at the outset. But the fact is, with fusion bombs most of the BOOM comes from the fusion reaction so as long as we can build a decent fission trigger, we should be able to build a fusion bomb that is less then 2T. But I could be over simplifying it. With our participation in nuclear research I am sure there are Canadians that can design one.

Which was my point.
If you're gonna go nuclear you cant do it half-assed.
Go all the way, or dont go at all

I cant 🤪
I still don't think Canada needs to go nuke. I doubt we even have SAMs in our northern territories... how many Subs we have on the northern straits? I wonder how many Russian subs are under the Arctic...

We never have to worry about the Russians. They have their own arctic, its even more vast then ours and it will take generations to develop. What we CAN do is collaborate with the Russians, invest in ice breakers to keep the Northwest passage open in collaboration with the Northern Route and we can have a east to west Suez/Panama alternative that is shorter and needs no locks. It will utterly transform the Canadian and Russian arctic.

If we went the nuke route, it would probably be the green light for Trumputin to invade militarily under being a security risk..

Then we'll team up with Europe, China and Mexico, and then Trump will be surrounded 💂‍♀️

Just checking in here...But isn't the idea to limit or eliminate nuclear warfare?

Another question...How does a country who can't meet it's NATO commitments even think about developing nuclear weapons?

Yeah, not quite

Russia and China want to develop the northern sea route. Of course they are armed, they need to be able to sink US subs that may try to close that route, and thus would be training to fight in Arctic conditions. Nothing will secure the Canadian Artic as better then its development

NUkes are a relatively cheap way to guarantee sovereignty. We can't possibly compete with US military spending so if that is the threat its nukes or surrender.
