I saw my favourite Toronto companion post a somewhat pro-Trump message yesterday on twitter and it was quite a bit disappointing to be honest. I’m all for free thinking and enjoy spending time with people that have different opinions but any support for things that will have devastating outcomes for Canadians is a turn off in more ways than one. She did quickly delete it but that actually made it worse in a way. How do others feel about situations like this?
Who is this provider?

Its fun watching all the Lefties freak out :D
You know Phil, the Americans did not start buying Mexican or Canadian products because they wanted to. It's simply because it made sense for them, as it would procure the lowest price on their end product, which they sell to Americans or re-export worldwide.

Now they will need to figure out a different supplier, hence higher cost, or pay the 25%, hence higher cost. So these tariffs put them in a lose-lose situation.

Of course convicted felon Trump does not care as tariff money will be funnelled down his and his cronies pocket.

Trump is holding last minute talks with Canada's Justin Trudeau as the tariff war escalates.
He said on Truth Social that he'll be speaking with the outgoing PM again at 3 p.m. ET.
Unless there is an agreement struck, the tariffs will go into effect at midnight tonight.

This is quite possibly the dumbest thing you have ever said.
Sorry I don't do dumb. But try again. Let me ask you this simple question: what qualifications did our buddy have to run a country starting in 2016? Did his work as a high school drama teacher or ski instructor prepare him for the job? The plain truth is he was in way over his head. The people that he put around him were in over their heads. JT's a left wing idealogue who doesn't like the United States and its free enterprise system. Its not shocking that our relationship with our largest trading partner and friend has soured over the years. Not totally his fault mind you because for the previous 4 years the guy in charge of leading that nation had the mental acuity of a grape.

That decision was made by Brian Mulroney long before Trudeau showed up on the scene. John Turner argued exactly what you are saying back in the 80’s and he lost the argument- Canadians elected Mulroney.

Essentially, that deal went reasonably well until Trump turned up in 2016 at which point we find ourselves so intertwined with the pricks that it is hard to get out.

I agree that Canada needs to become less dependent on the US for trade.
I think this is always the dilemma.
A more efficient system is more fragile.
Spreading things around, keeping more production here, etc... all that makes things more robust, but less efficient.

This rupture really does look like it will put pressure to move things into the "more robust" approach for a while.
But there will always be tension surrounding what is the right balance.

Statement from Maxime Bernier outlining the People's Party of Canada position. I don't completely agree with what he says but he makes some valid points with #3 being the one I agree with the most.

It’s important to understand that the 25% tariffs announced by President Trump today are NOT imposed on Canada — they will be paid by American consumers and businesses who buy goods imported from Canada. Tariffs are a tax, and Americans who will have to pay more or go without our products will be the first to suffer.

Of course, Canadian exporters of these goods will as a consequence lose clients, contracts and sales, and will be forced to cut down on production and lay off workers. Or they will lower their prices to keep market shares and will see their profits diminish.

Because 75% of our exports go south of the border, our economy will for sure be very negatively impacted by this.

The stupidest thing our government can do however to deal with this crisis is to impose the same kind of tariffs “dollar for dollar” against US imports.

The US economy is ten times bigger than ours, much less reliant on trade than ours, and much less dependent on our market than we are on theirs.

Not only would retaliatory tariffs have much less impact on American exporters, they would immediately impoverish Canadian consumers forced to pay more for imported goods, as well as destabilize Canadian businesses that need inputs from the US in their production processes. It would more than double the harm of the US tariffs to our economy.

Trade wars are bad for everyone, but they are much worse for a small country with fewer options. We simply cannot win a trade war with the US. It’s very unlikely that Trump will back down. All we will do is provoke a massive economic crisis in Canada, until we are forced to capitulate.

Another self-destructive thing to do would be to set up giant “pandemic-level” bailout plans to support everyone affected by this trade war. This will simply bankrupt our governments even more than they already are and make us even weaker.

So what should we do?

1. Double down on efforts to control our border, crack down on fentanyl dealers, deport all illegals, and impose a complete moratorium on immigration, to answer Trump’s immediate concerns about Canada.

2. Tell the US administration that we are ready to renegotiate North American free trade and put dairy supply management and other contentious issues on the table.

3. Wait and see to what extent Trump is willing to keep tariffs in place despite the harm it does to the US economy. Despite his pretenses that Americans don’t need our stuff, the reality is that on the contrary they have few other options for crucial resources like oil, lumber, uranium and other minerals, etc. He will stop acting like a bully when he sees that he can get more results by sitting down and negotiating.

4. To reduce our dependence on the US market, immediately implement an ambitious plan to tear down interprovincial trade barriers and help our impacted exporting industries find alternative markets in other countries.

5. Immediately implement a series of bold reforms to make our economy more productive, including: reduce corporate and personal taxes, abolish the capital gains tax, abolish all corporate subsidies, get rid of excessive regulation, remove impediments to the exploitation and export of natural resources, drastically cut government spending, mandate the Bank of Canada to stop printing money and start accumulating a gold reserve to prepare for the global monetary reset (which is likely part of Trump’s plan).

In short, instead of adopting a suicidal strategy to confront Trump, we must do what we should have done a long time ago to strengthen our economy and our bargaining position. The transition will be rough, but not as much as complete bankruptcy and disintegration.

Last year, for instance, the United States seized 185 pounds of methamphetamines coming in from Canada, as compared to 158,000 pounds coming in via Mexico.
this is because Trudeau and his radical liberal thugs are really good at trafficking contraband!

He would also need a congressional declaration of war FFS!!!
There hasn't been one of those since 1942.

Now, most military action since then that lasted any length of time did still have congressional authorization, even if no declaration of war.

Something like invading all of Canada would require something along those lines and general public support to pull off.
It's not throwing some troops at brown people somewhere.

Guess who's taking the tariffs deals with the right mindset....
China willing to have talks with Trump.
What are you talking about? China has the ability to kick every single American business off their soil.

How do you think Corps like Apple and McDonald's will feel if China says "Go home"?

We care about news...not fake news... and why is Mexico sending 10k troops? I thought there was no problem at the borders?
To placate Trump and make him look tough.
And he backed off the tariff threat for a month.
There is no guarantee that Mexico will do anything or that Trump even cares that they will as long as he looks good.
All they have to do is be very appreciative of Trump while doing nothing and he will tell you what a great relationship he has with them.
His "deal" with Kim Jong in his 1st term is an example.
KJ just turned around and tested long range ballistic missiles lol.
And you just eat it all up.

What qualifications does Pierre have?
That's right. None.
20 years as a politician including 7 years as a Parliamentary Secretary, 2 years as a Minister, 7 years as opposition critic for Treasury and Finance and now 2+ years as Leader of the Opposition. An undergraduate degree in International Relations. Eminently more qualified than Justy.
