Deport them from Canada too. I'm tired of these protesters blocking streets.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order during his first week back in office that gives the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) the authority to deport foreign nationals, including students, who express support for groups designated as terrorist organizations by the U.S. government. The order, titled “Protecting the United States from Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats,” focuses on individuals who support, promote or assist in terrorist activities.

Foreign nationals supporting Hamas could be targeted
Under the new directive, DHS can actively remove individuals from the country, who meet the criteria of supporting terrorism unless doing so would compromise national security or ongoing investigations. The order’s provisions could raise concerns for some foreign students who participated in pro-Palestinian rallies held on college campuses in the wake of the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

Some of these students have been accused of advocating for Hamas, a group designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S., with particular attention being drawn to the presence of Hamas symbols and flags at these rallies.

Controversy surrounding the executive action
Critics of the order, including civil rights groups like the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), have voiced concerns about its potential to infringe on free speech. The organization issued a statement arguing that the executive order “threatens an unprecedented crackdown on free speech and legal immigration” by applying “vague, subjective, and unenforceable” criteria. The move has sparked debate over the balance between national security and individual rights.

Review of visa practices and stricter screening for high-risk countries
In addition to deportations, the executive order mandates a review of how the U.S. issues visas. A report outlining recommendations for stricter visa restrictions from specific countries deemed to pose security risks will be presented to the president within 60 days.

The order also strengthens the vetting process for foreign nationals, introducing enhanced screening for individuals seeking to enter or remain in the United States.

Rubio wanted them out back in May of last year. surely with Trump's backing he may get somewhere.

Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio wrote a letter to the Biden administration this week demanding that international students who have taken part in pro-Palestine protests in the U.S. be deported immediately.

The action Rubio is calling for would deprive these students, who are in the country on education visas, of their rights to free speech, assembly, and due process — rights that are afforded not only to U.S. citizens, but to anyone who is present in the U.S.

Rubio addressed his letter specifically to State Secretary Antony Blinken and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, claiming they were legally obligated to follow his demands regarding international students who have protested against Israel’s genocide of Palestinians.

The Florida senator wrongly accused the pro-Palestine protesters of rallying in support of Hamas, claiming that students’ swift deportation would be justified because Hamas is on the State Department’s list of terrorist organizations. In reality, student protesters are demanding that their universities divest from companies that profit from the genocide of Palestinians.

International students who have participated in the nationwide protests, including those living in or helping to construct encampments on campuses, should face “immediate expulsion from their host institution and our generous country,” Rubio said. “No questions asked.”

He went on to call the demonstrations “abhorrent,” stating in his letter that “American colleges and universities [should be] reminded” by the Biden administration “of their responsibilities” to enforce “the laws of our land.”

“Let me be clear: espousing support for a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization is grounds for the termination of a visa and immediate removal from our country,” Rubio added, again mischaracterizing what the protests have been about.

Rubio’s letter fails to recognize the democratic rights that international students are entitled to while in the U.S.

According to the American Bar Association (ABA), the action that Rubio is calling on the Biden administration to employ would be illegal in cases where students have a visa or green card. In a FAQ on its website, the ABA notes that participation in protests could result in deportation for undocumented students, depending on the current presidential administration.

“If they have a visa or greencard they cannot be deported” for engaging in a protest, the organization states.

Rubio’s letter comes as universities across the country have authorized police departments to violently sweep Gaza solidarity encampments, with cops stationing snipers on the roof of Indiana University, tear gassing students in Virginia, physically assaulting people in Austin, and shooting protesters in the face with rubber bullets in Los Angeles. Cops also fired a gun during a raid on a building occupied by students at Columbia University.

According to a count by The Appeal, there have been 2,900 people arrested on campuses for protesting against Israel’s genocide so far.

As Donald Trump is inaugurated a second time, independent media organizations are faced with urgent mandates: Tell the truth more loudly than ever before. Do that work even as our standard modes of distribution (such as social media platforms) are being manipulated and curtailed by forces of fascist repression and ruthless capitalism. Do that work even as journalism and journalists face targeted attacks, including from the government itself. And do that work in community, never forgetting that we’re not shouting into a faceless void – we’re reaching out to real people amid a life-threatening political climate.

Our task is formidable, and it requires us to ground ourselves in our principles, remind ourselves of our utility, dig in and commit.
As a dizzying number of corporate news organizations – either through need or greed – rush to implement new ways to further monetize their content, and others acquiesce to Trump’s wishes, now is a time for movement media-makers to double down on community-first models.

At Truthout, we are reaffirming our commitments on this front: We won’t run ads or have a paywall because we believe that everyone should have access to information, and that access should exist without barriers and free of distractions from craven corporate interests. We recognize the implications for democracy when information-seekers click a link only to find the article trapped behind a paywall or buried on a page with dozens of invasive ads. The laws of capitalism dictate an unending increase in monetization, and much of the media simply follows those laws. Truthout and many of our peers are dedicating ourselves to following other paths – a commitment which feels vital in a moment when corporations are evermore overtly embedded in government.

Over 80 percent of Truthout‘s funding comes from small individual donations from our community of readers, and the remaining 20 percent comes from a handful of social justice-oriented foundations. Over a third of our total budget is supported by recurring monthly donors, many of whom give because they want to help us keep Truthout barrier-free for everyone.
You can help by giving today. Whether you can make a small monthly donation or a larger gift, Truthout only works with your support.

But weren't these 10's or hundreds of thousands of protesters supposed to be reflecting the way the world thought of Israel and how they were going to bring down the evil Zionists and even Zionism itself. They were changing the world.

In the end, they accomplished nothing because, truth be told, they did nothing that would change anything. All they did was make a nuisance of themselves and turn people against their cause. They resorted to intimidation and threatening quiet neighbourhoods who feared violence because of their aggressive nature.

Looks like they are looking to do a bit of mind reading.
Or electronic strip search and additional annoying questioning at port of entries. lol.
Like most of the executive orders, this seems to be written in such a way as to allow for lots of arbitrary judgment.

Now, you could be optimistic and say that the relevant agencies will then come out with standard procedures and criteria that can be assessed transparently.
But I'm not sure why you would.

I wouldn't.
That is why I am thinking annoying questioning at port of entries or electronic strip search.
The CBP guys at the port of entries are not the smartest bunch.
They will now use their new found powers to harass people they profile.

Think of the deportations as the cost of supporting / being supported by the terrorist organization HAMAS

Their stated objective to eliminate Israel is the root of the evil here.
