First fire all the Canada post workers… and if this thing is losing billions of dollars, the government of Canada should get rid of it sell it to UPS or FedEx where they would operate it cheaper and better, the fired Canada Post employees could apply for a new jobs with the new companies

Really who needs this nonsense? Everybody can get along without the Canada Post. I don’t miss it at all, and I don’t think a lot of people do.

How much would UPS or Fedex charge to mail a simple letter or greeting card from Toronto, say, to anywhere else in Canada?

I checked the Fedex site and it quoted $57.18 for a 0.1 pound envelope from Toronto to Winnipeg.

I believe UPS is similar.

If they are much more affordable than that I couldn't find that information.

I know that's why Canada Post loses money, but for those who use snail mail for whatever the reason, including for some computer illiterate, not on-line, older, or other people who have no other electronic option, Canada Post is the only affordable option.

Fedex/UPS would have to adjust operating costs, a simple letter might cost a little more from the ridiculously low money losing venture it is now but they should charge more to these companies that will send their flyers out like Canadian tire and future shop, etc.. Maybe we can eliminate some of those it’s way too much junk mail as it is..

You could also slash a couple of layers of overpaid federal employees.

I’m not sure how many people don’t have an online option to receive their mail, but I think it’s relatively low, a low number that could easily be taught how to use a computer.

I don’t miss the mail service at all.

And maybe the government will find a low cost way to provide universal free or very low cost wi-fi access to all citizens in their homes, and provide basic computers to those who cannot afford them.

Many old people have no idea how to use a computer, are too old to learn, and sometimes even senile. But who cares about them, they're dying off anyways. Unfortunately they will be replaced by younger people who are constantly aging, many of whom will also eventually develop dementia.

As far as magazine subscriptions, they will sooner or later be on-line only. So what if you hate reading lengthy articles on a small computer screen, which you may not have with you if you are dining alone in a restaurant and enjoy reading magazines during your lunch or dinner. I enjoy my weekly New Yorker and monthly Record Collector magazine subscriptions. Record Collector comes to me via snail mail from England. I wonder what that would cost if they couldn't use Canada Post for the last part of the journey?

Maybe in your particular circumstances you don't miss mail service at all, but many people do.

Yes, junk mail is a mild annoyance, kills trees, and is usually thrown in the "blue box". However, for many companies it's a cost efficient form of advertising that, assuming they analyze the cost/benefit to them, is deemed profitable, and the postal service is paid to distribute it.

By the way, the U.S Postal Service lost $1.8 billion in 2024, a decrease of .4 billion from 2023 due to efficiency improvements. Do you think they are going to shut down any time soon? I believe they consider it an essential service, as do most developed countries in the world.

I’m not saying kill mail delivery, just get it out of the Canadian Federal government’s hands.

And what private or public company would take it over with a guaranteed loss? And how much would they have to raise basic mail rates or reduce services to at least break even?

If you were correct and Canada Post is past its prime, then the government wouldn't be looking to mandate them back to work, they would let them rot on the picket line til they break.

Canada Post developed postal codes for their own benefit. They should charge a royalty to any business that uses a postal code to route deliveries that does not use Canada Post as the carrier. Same goes for USPS.

Do they get paid while striking?
Not by taxpayers. But the union has a fund to pay striking emplyees a lower 'strike pay' wage. Money that ultimately originated from taxpayers hands and remitted as union dues.

Something a lot of people miss that it is often the union leadership and bureaucracy that is negotiation for theier own interests and that of the union, not the actual workers. Union politicking for the leadership isquite complex but in the end, MOST union leadders are just feathering their iown nest by increasing the budget of the union by increased dues coming from higher wages.

if you apply for a credit card, then tell us how you can get it when it states that it could take around 5 days to get it through the mail?

No private enterprise will want to take over The Canada Post.
Utility Bills, Government Cheques, Passports, Official Documents, etc all for Seniors and others that are not Tech Savvy, will be of no interest to the UPS or Fedex.
Otherwise, if they were an alternative to Canada Post then why are small businesses suffering from this Postal strike?

I don’t know about that, if it’s done right I think there is a lot of money that could be made from the Canada Post operation.
