Which side will make him a hero, the Dems or the Repugs? Hmmmmm
To be honest, I've not seen a whole lot of sympathy for the CEO from anyone, regardless of what political stripe they wear.

In fact, I think this whole episode has opened the eyes of people across the spectrum as to how predatory and cunning the American health insurance industry actually is. The CEO made $10.2 million a year and the policies his company makes deny about one-third of claims -- a decision like that is coming straight from the CEO. That's a lot of people left unable to pay for needed healthcare or being left bankrupted from it.

The US health insurance sector doesn't give a damn if a person is a Democrat or Republican -- they fuck over everyone equally.

I think the point he was trying to make is the healthcare industry is running a monopoly.

He's not wrong
Its not quite a monopoly but its highly concentrated. There needs to be some significant reform to the health insurance industry.

Kirky got his information wrong, Brian Thompson was one of the founders of the company who was the CEO of the company until 2021.

He was not one of the founders of Company. The Company started back in the 1970's. He joined United Healthcare Group in 2004 and became the CEO of its Medicare and Medicaid business in 2017 and then its entire insurance division in April 2021. Sourced right from his LinkedIn page.

There was a bit on CBC news last night about cancer patients having to pay huge amounts for their own care. One girl from Quebec was out $30,000 for her treatment of colorectal cancer. WTF?

How is that 2nd degree? I thought that only happened in Canada.
Thats what I said. Should be 1st degree.

Its typical shitty reporting.
Yahoo headline says 1st degree, but then the article below says 2nd degree

Luigi Mangione seen for first time after being charged with first-degree murder in Brian Thompson death
Luigi Mangione, the suspect named in connection to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was seen for the first time at a Pennsylvania courthouse on Monday, 9 December.

Luigi Mangione was led into the Altoona court for an arraignment on the gun charges, after being arrested after being spotted at a McDonald’s.

New York prosecutors filed second-degree murder charges against the 26-year-old hours after he was charged with gun crimes in Pennsylvania. He is being held without bond in a Pennsylvania jail.

I've read stories of people going to South America, Latin America or Asia to get cancer treatments because they couldn't afford the co payment.

From Reddit:
It’s because of how New York codifies its murder statutes. In New York first degree murder is reserved for people charged with killing police officers, government officials, witnesses, contract killing, multiple murders and a few other special categories.

New York’s second degree murder is the intentional murder count that most states codify as first degree murder.

Here is New York’s first degree murder statute.

And here is their second degree statute.

It carries 15-25 years in prison

Penalties for Second-Degree Murder

Second-degree murder is a serious felony, and a conviction almost certainly will result in a prison sentence, even if the offender has no criminal history. They may face life imprisonment in some cases. Here are some examples of sentencing ranges:
  • Arizona: 10-25 years (16 years presumptive)
  • California: Generally 15 years to life
  • Colorado: 16-48 years
  • Florida: Up to 30 years, or up to life
  • Massachusetts: Life imprisonment, but eligible for parole after 15-25 years
  • New York: Minimum term of 15-25 years
  • Texas: 5-99 years, or life imprisonment (Texas does not distinguish between first-degree and second-degree murder)
