I'm willing to bet that if this latest GST political bribery scheme doesn't improve their polling numbers closer to the election, they'll axe the carbon tax as a last resort.

What they fall to understand is that giving people a financial break, after you've given them financial burdens for years, is not going to fool anyone and it's too little too late.

In actual social democratic countries, their VATs are applied both at higher levels and on more goods than we do.
Also VAT taxes are considering one of the less destructive taxes. It's visible so the mouth breathers get all sex nuts and retard strong over it but raising the GST and HST in favor of lowering other taxes would be better policy. But much like what's his face and his Green Shift, that is way to complicated for a population with a 2 second attention span and a borderline retarded level of knowledge on the topic.

Say what you will about their size of government, they have to be keen on raising taxes efficiently. Which is also why they gave up on wealth taxes and other eat the rich policies, but apparently Bernie never got that memo either.

Bad idea, sounds good on the surface but it isn't really. There are other options that would be better. But judging public policy to it's possible alternative, sigh, why am I ghey.

Also Jospeh Heath argues quite correctly that the solution to something being too expensive isn't subsidizing it [which this basically is] and sure as hell not price controls but working on the income side. Then you let people allocate their resources based on what they need on a neutral basis.

Also pretty much all the important shit is already GST free. Actual proper food, escorts. Funny how in the thumbnail the foreground is fruits which don't have the GST.


All that being said Pierre Poulet will never actually bring up the problems with this policy because even if he understands it [Harper would], he would know that your average voter doesn't know nor care.

First, no reason to take GST off booze or restaurant meals. Those I would call luxury items.
That $150,000 should be a lot lower. More like $60,000, and made available to anyone who has an income of less than 60,000 not just those who worked in 2023.
How about children's clothes and diapers GST free permanently.
How about no GST/ on home heating(NG/ heating oil), electricity and water/sewer bills permanently. You know, essentials of life.
