The role of a father is to have your kids think on their own. Not to indoctrinate your old fart thinking...
Not quite.

While the objective of parenting is to teach your children to make GOOD decisions without your help, you do that by teaching them what the important considerations are when making decisions and you teach them to to see the likely outcomes of different choices without having to learn every lesson the hard way. It may be useful sometimes to let them learn the error of their thinking by trial and error, but there are MANY instances where allowing that would be irresponsible parenting (e.g. you wouldn't let your young child learn about the importance of looking both ways before crossing the street through the trial and error of being struck by a car).

Just so you understand what was going on between Swift and her father in this video - Swift's father was advising against her declaring herself in a heated political campaign. He was not trying to tell her who to vote for, or what to believe. Not only is he a father, he's also an experienced businessman and he lives and works in a swing state. He deals with real people and has seen what political involvement does in the business world. He knows that for every friend you make in business with a political statement, you forever lose just as many (but probably more) customers. Further, he's been around long enough to see how heated poltical contests bring out unhinged individuals and how that is a safety issue for those who make their political views known through a large media platform and who are highly visible. He's giving her good advice. She's not listening. She's making a decision that could have grave personal and financial consequences, and one she doesn't NEED to make, and she's making that decision out of unbridled emotion. Let's hope the worst doesn't come of it.

Except she's a billionaire who is clearly way more smart artistically, with business and politics.
There is no reason for her to subvert her views to her father's, she should listen but he should also listen to her even more.

It's just another calculated business move. She believes this will earn her more accolades and more $$$ from her fan base. She's probably right. Her fans are young and dumb.
