How GFE Term originated - I was one of the first users of the term - History.

Dave, founder of sexwork.com, was one of the originators of "GFE" before websites for the general public became available in 1994. This used dial-ups at the fantastic speed of 120 cps (without a k), and it took many minutes to download a single message.on the alt.sex.prostitution usenet group. In a few years, we upgraded to a bit faster 300 baud dial-up modems. GFE meant treating the escort/dancer/massage gal as a real girlfriend with intimacy and caring as a person more than just a body for sex acts. Even if it was just for the hour and a cost for her time, that is far more enjoyable for some men than just the typical sex acts. Detailed history on GFE at https://www.sexwork.com/Intimacy/GFE.html

My old website has not been updated for years has my GFE history discussion from 2001.

I still have a copy of @Dave in Phoenix 's 2001 Montreal Spreadsheet in Excel. I got it before TERB was founded.
Wow, you must be old like me and I was on Fred's old board before Terb etc. BTW I can't recall the name, odd as I recall, and I wonder if you or any "readers" do. That spreadsheet goes back decades. Oh yes, obviously from 2001, and I think I posted it about monthly even earlier. You must have converted it to Excel. I think I did it in a table format, but I don't know if I even have stuff that far back. Or maybe it's still on my old Montreal board. I haven't looked lately!

Thanks for the memories and for remembering me.

Gee...Cabbagetown.... I kind of know it well. I wonder if you were at the big street festival about a week ago, or last weekend. Or the long parade on the latest holiday, although that may not have been within Cabbagetown but in nearby Toronto "town."

Dave, the previous board that you're thinking of might be 'canbest' or 'bigdoggie'.

If you're familiar with Cabbagetown, maybe you know the 'Welcome to Cabbagetown' mural on the Parliament Street liquor store?

Cabbagetown Mural.jpg

I designed the alphabet used for Cabbagetown. I had nothing to do with painting the mural; they just used my font, named Cabbagetown, which was released about six months before they started painting.

It's free to download at dafont(dot)com: https://www.dafont.com/cabbagetown.font

I make some hobby money from commercial licensing.

This .gif is in the download .zip:

And best seen on a very large monitor; the actual dimensions are 650 x 700 pixels.

Dave In Pheonix - A pleasure to meet you sir. Back in the day I spent countless hours on the Niagara Falls link from sexworkcanada. (Not just because everything took longer...lol). Honestly I was looking for that site when I came cross Terb.

What your site had that this one lacked is actual experiential reviews of interactions from the strip clubs. But the "massage" review were also quality.

Are you referring to Canbest? If I remember correctly, that was the main board I used to check out before terb.

Were there any Bulletin Board System for sex back in the day?

Thanks for comments. I know the web was slower back then. or at least on our end. I am on a Gigiblast connection now with about 960 Mbs down. But back then it was sure better than 120 or 300 baud dialups :)

While the Internet is faster my brain seems slower. I don't recall massage parlors unless you mean my massaging of strippers! Yes that was the fun days in Niagara and my favorite club was the one further out on Lundy's Lane that had a bright searchlight towards the sky kind of saying hey, come out here. Also good times at Hamilton Strip and PE-55 on my way down to Toronto.

No, I used women for sex :)

I am trying to recall what a BBS was... Maybe what the dial up modem connected to after all those tones to the usenet. The terminal system sounds right. I recall that I probably used Forte Agent later. Before the Windows GIU, (DOS days) I used OS/2 and Wang PCs. For business, I go back to noisy card sorters and Burroughs accounting machines you fed the cards into. And the Frieden sp? calculator before floppies and those huge 3-foots? diameter hard drives.

Then the selectric typewriter was a big modern thing that I enjoyed typing on vs the old mechancical typewriters. but these no related to newsgroups.

I am not connecting the original Fred to canbest but remember it. I may be wrong but my brain is not connecting it to Fred's pre TER site.... but you might be right...

I have no idea if Fred had anything to do with it. I just brought it up because it's the only board I remember. Also remember the original Lyla board when it was run by Lyla.

Yes, remember Lyla. I think the original Fred's board was separate from Canbest. We had a phone conversation, as I recall; for some reason, he called, but I don't remember the details. Sadly, he died quite a few years ago.

@Dave in Phoenix :

I still have a folder of bookmarks from my first computer, (January, 2001), and here's a list of sites from that period dealing with Escort message boards:

The Erotic Review - just a url
Bigdoggie.net
starblvd.net
bbbforjohn.com
sp-list,com
adult-canada.com
thefoxfiles.com
ermail.org
canadianescorts.com
interpubl.com - I think this one was CanBest
escortaccess.com

Of course, none of these pages exist anymore, but maybe a name or two will ring a bell with you

Wow thanks for all the research.

Your 2001 date is interesting since it was about seven months before I joined TERB. I don't recall if there was any lag time between old and the now TERB. Or, if I joined this new TERB immediately when it opened.

Ahhh, I just found references on my Private List to the whole story of Fred Zed's death in 2017. I titled it "Tributes to Fred Zed," which is long and mentions the prior board but not the name. I recall also finding the OB.

One short paragraph:
Fred built a community and created a venue where like-minded people could interact and communicate in ways we couldn't before. His contribution to the industry was significant, and we are all better off for what he created for us.

Since the old stuff seems to have been deleted here and there were some family issues, I won't say more related to his death. I had even suggested doing a memorial page for him like I did for Stan Dale of the Human Awareness Institute and the workshops of his I attended in California.

Going back further I summarized lots of emails as I was kind of in the middle with the GTERB vs TERB mess. But this 2004-2007.

I was also in a discussion of I believe the idiot board GTERB owner and defending TERB when they were attacked. Oh yes and LoveCanada and the issues with the owner/s (Peter) of Diamonds...and Court Restraining orders - not related to Fred - Wow reading some of my old stuff that was interesting times!

I was defending Fred against attacks going back to 2007 and someone posing as him, which I believe resulted in him calling me to discuss since I believe he was aware of my defending him.

On the old site - Wow, thanks for the research. None of them ring the original Fred bell but it has been a long time since I even thought about the old pre-TER site. I am thinking even if I saw the name it may not ring any bells in my aging brain :)

I posted as bobistheowl from July, 2003 - January, 2017. That handle was banned, (but not by a TERB mod!!! - it's a long story*), and later reinstated. I tried to get Fred Zed to fix that for me, (we had exchanged several e-mails over the years), but he died right around that same time.

I don't remember the password for that handle, nor the e-mail address associated with the account, and I personally believe that it's unethical to have two active handles on the same board. My past posting history can still be accessed through Search by me or anyone else, so it's all good.

I still use the bobistheowl handle for my typography, on some other boards, and on Steam, where I'm a Grandmaster in online RISK.

*If you have any interest in the story of how my original handle was banned, shoot me a PM, and I'll copy/paste it for you from a conversation with someone else. It's a strange story, but 100% true.
