Just heard some sad news tonight. Maze frontman Frankie Beverly passed away yesterday at the age of 77. One of many great voices to come out of Philadelphia. He started with a group called the Butlers and they released this northern soul staple
"If That's What You Wanted" (1967)

Beverley decided his music wasn't Philly soul style so he relocated to San Francisco in 1970 with a new group name Raw Soul. Soon after they changed their name to Maze and that's where he found success. Throughout the 2nd half of the 70's, the 80's and first half of the 90's they released several singles that found success on the R&B charts and others that should have. Like this one, which is my favorite from them

Joy and Pain (1980)

Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock sampled this song and scored a top 10 rap hit in 1988.

Maze's most famous song is probably "Before I Let Go" which was released in 1981. Beyonce actually covered it for a live LP she released for the film Homecoming in 2019. She also performed it on her tour. Its actually pretty good, but obviously not as good as the original

This was 1 of 2 #1 hits they had on the Hot R&B/Soul charts. Released in 1985
