Gotta say that I did not watch even a single solid second of American network coverage and I thought that our Canadian coverage was excellent. I think his voice has been around for some time, but I have finally learned and appreciated the name Mark Lee. The dude has an excellent tone, vibe and cadence to his coverage. Well done. What other sports does he cover?

Did anybody watch any American coverage? Is there any reason to do so? Better commercials, maybe? LOL

Since today was the second last day of the Olympics I juggled using 5 devices for my LIVE coverage. I watched on 3 networks CBC, NBC and Eurosport. Plus, some of my devices were used for the National Bank Open tennis matches happening in Toronto as I type. ;)

Canadian commentators and in studio personnel were good. I like that they have ex=Olympians as they bring a unique perspective into the coverage.

So glad they did not use that old fossil Ron McClean.

The one thing I wished they would have done was show different events on the other networks. Most of the time they were running the same show/coverage on TSN, Sportsnet and CBC. That is why I would switch to the NBC channel to watch something different.

I agree with Shack, Mark Lee was excellent.

I mostly see Mark Lee do Track and Field on CBC.

I agree regarding Mark Lee. He has done NHL play by play in the western provinces.
His tone and style remind me of the late great Don Wittman.

I'm not sure how anyone can make a general critique of "American coverage". It always depends on the sport and the announcers. Some of them have been doing their sport for decades and do it well. Of course, they're homers.

I think NBC does a good job with their color commentary. I'm using that to describe the short human interest stories surrounding the games. NBC has the clout to pull in some big names to show up.

This is what makes the difference for me regarding Canadian vs. American Olympic media coverage:

1) 2 simultaneous events going on. Canada's women's soccer team quarter final game and Summer MacIntosh's 3rd, I believe, gold medal swim.

CBC covered the live soccer game in full, for the full uninterrupted duration of the 2 hour or so length of the match. NO swirching over for the 10 or so minutes of Summer's 3rd gold medal swimming final win at fuckin all!

CBC could have pictured-in-pictured that soccer game to the top right-hand corner of the screen for the very few minutes to cover a frickin HISTORIC SWIM. Think about it. A disgraced soccer team playing a 2 hour or so, quarter final game, NOT a gold medal game, consumes all of CBC's frickin airtime, leaving viewers looking to view the historic swim in the lurch and sending them elsewhere.

That elsewhere was live NBC coverage of the Summer's historic swim. AND this is what CBC should have done.

2) Here's the thing. I have been watching the Olympics since '68. The American networks were notorious for overbearing partisanship in their coverage for decades. Fawning overly long personal background stories on the "the stars" of their choosing. BUT now, CBC takes the cake in this dept. Some of their segments are vomit inducing and on the whole overwhelms the audience with syrupy sappy smarminess.

Leave the CBC, take the NBC.

For those who are fans of Scott Russell, today is his final day at CBC.

Top professional track and field athletes are making good money from sponsorships and the Diamond circuit. But athletes in Olympic sports like gymnastics struggle to get by. Mary Lou Retton, the famous American gymnast, fell ill recently and was found not to have health insurance. spotfund.com was her lifeline.

They did use MacLean. He was in the studio analyzing some of the track events with Donovan Bailey. I also think MacLean is past his due date but, to his credit, he left the talking to Bailey, who did a superb job, especially when he broke down why Canada won the 4x100 relay.

Another analyst who is consistently excellent is Byron MacDonald in swimming. He's not a cheerleader, like many of the other analysts.

It was very good with a few exceptions.

1) I don't understand why Sportsnet One and TSN 2 were not used at times to show different events. All the TSN Channels would always show the same thing (if 2 or more TSN Channels were showing the Olympics), and all the Sportnet Channels would show the same thing (if 2 or more had the Olympics on).

2) The golf coverage was sporadic, and to follow it you had to use CBC Gem. Nuisance to jump from streaming to broadcast TV -- or for some of the older folk to even use streaming. I fully understand why Canada broadcasters didn't want to use one of the 3 channels to show golf exclusively for 5 hours straight.

They had a better option - the Golf Channel. I don't understand why CBC/Sportsnet/TSN couldn't work out an agreement with the Golf Channel, which would have allowed the Golf Channel to broadcast the event in Canada.

FYI, he competed in swimming for Canada at the '72 Munich Games, he and other swimmers were returning the the unsecured athlete's village after a night out and saw the Black September terrorists scale a wall to enter the complex where the Israeli team was staying.
