Garcia traded to Seattle for a minor league outfielder.

Who needs Shohei Ohtani, we got Ernie Clement. Yesterday he pitched. Today he got a hit in the bottom of the 9th with 2 out to walk it off.
Clase is a fairly good return for Yimi Garcia. Grades have been fairly good for the Jays in the few I have seen.
He was the #10 prospect in Seattle's system per MLB.com, and enters the Jays Farm system as their #7 prospect.
22 year old AAA player that has played about 20 MLB games this year, the Jays are looking at him as a player that can contribute by next year as they try to re-tool quickly.
Unfortunately other FA's like Kikuchi and Richards have sputtered (in the case of Richards, heavily sputtered) as we get to the deadline. About 45 days ago Kikuchi looked like someone who could fetch a really good prospect ( a top 5 system type). Hopefully we can get somebody the value of Clase for him, but he is going backwards. Richards went from not much value at beginning of 2024, to (about a month ago) some solid value as a swiss army knife type pitcher who could do any role. And now he is close to being back to no value.
I had mentioned earlier that I think Atkins is quite capable of doing deadline deals for pending FA's. There is not much big picture vision (where Atkins seems to struggle) involved in those deals ... you have no choice but to get rid of a player and get prospect value.
The bigger concern is what "vision" is being used at the deadline for guys like Green, Bassitt, Gausman, Bichette, Guerrero, maybe even an IKF, all who have some value and are not pending FA's .... I'm pretty convinced Atkins has no intent to move any and will try to run back a re-tool next year. Obviously you can't bring in somebody new this week to consider those bigger picture trades - would have needed to be done by beginning of July at the latest.

Well the Dodgers just traded James Paxton so it's kind of weird if they would unload a starting pitcher then turn around and acquire one.

…..and Paxton was 8-2, but with a 4 plus era. And the Dodgers traded him for a minor league infielder.
It’s strange for sure. The Dodgers have just had Kershaw return off the IL, but for past month or so, it has been very public knowledge that they’re looking to deepen their pitching depth. With Mookie Betts returning from the IL, I see them really focussing on pitching depth. The Dodgers really have their eyes set on Tarik Skubal from Tigers. Unmmm yeah right that’s not happening. That’s why I say Kikuchi might be a Dodgers target. I see the Rangers possibly making that deal as well.

There are a fair bunch of teams looking for a competent 4th starter - Indians (due to injuries), Twins even teams like Braves, Brewers.
I'd imagine there is up to 8 teams inquiring for Kikuchi so it should drive up the value to a decent prospect (similar to Clase). Unfortunately he is not pitching like he was in April and May or there could have been a really nice bidding war.

I disagree. We had a good 2 or 3 year run, that's all. Under Shapiro, this team has never been a "playoff team". It has only made the playoffs under this expanded format. I know that baseball is a game where an inferior team like the Jays can slip in as a wild card, get hot and go for a run but this team is not and under this management has never been close to a "playoff team". This team under this management has had zero chance of going on a run in the playoffs.

I have never liked the negotiating power and ability to extend from this front office. This is the thing that has always baffled me. No understanding of chemistry and keeping guys together. Ross just threw together one year deals, and expects magic. I love the mentality of locking up your core.

The Toronto Blue Jays have traded right-handed pitcher Nate Pearson to the Chicago Cubs.
There was talk he wants to be a starter. Maybe the Jays weren't thrilled about that.
This is another testament to the Jays' ability, or lack thereof, to draft and develop. They promised to have a farm system that would be the wellspring of being a perennial contender after criticizing AA.
