Wow, that's a shock. Not many better than him, and he paired up well with Friedman. Definitely Sportsnet's loss.
I'll give you my opinion of what it means, but I could be wrong. His last work for Sportsnet was during the 2024 NHL draft, which was June 28. I believe his last interview was with the Leafs first round pick. After that, he just disappeared until a day or so ago when he posted a message on social media about his departure from Sportsnet. So, it's possible something happened during the draft that led to a parting of the ways.
Kypper needs to go more than anyone else. JD But-kiss too.

In other news Harnareyan Singh is getting a HBO documentary.
You can hate McLean for what he did to Don Cherry but he knows more than any of the other stooges with morning shows on fan 590. Marek was the only one who's got a clue.
I always found Marek's voice irritating. Nasally and inarticulate. And that gag worthy 32 Thoughts YouTube thing. Faux hipster ramblings by dull suburban white guys.
Another guy that I used to like who seemed to disappear was Paul Romanuck.
Many of these media people start to get inflated egos and think they're the show, this is what happened to Marek. Him and Friedman would always talk over each other on their lunch show as both thought they should be the one talking. I complained in an email to sportsnet and it did seem to improve, was it me, who knows? Marek got to be boring with obnoxious takes and laughed too long at stuff that wasn't funny.
These guys start to think they're players like Stephen a Smith does. Brian Hayes seems to be getting a big ego too. Dave Randorf was good but he bolted to Tampa. The flames guy was also good but he left for Chicago I believe.

I definitely agree with this statement.
Whether or not this was the case with Jeff Marek, I have no idea as I try to stay away from all the talking heads/fake "insiders" who tell us
with complete authority and assurance (sarcasm intended) what and why is happening in the world of sports.
A lot of these guys, whether former players or not, think that they are actually the main attraction - and not the actual games they're covering. In truth, 95% of these guys are very replaceable/interchangable , with dozens of other guys waiting in the wings hoping to take their job.
Somehow, I think Sportsnet will carry on.
I don't believe Jeff Marek is like that. Now Nick Kyperos on the other hand
I didn't think Marek's ego was inflated, considering how good and successful he had become. Like the saying goes "it ain't bragging if you can do it". But, I did find he was becoming more "woke", which was a bit annoying. I still like him and consider him to be in the top tier of hockey broadcasters. It would nice if TSN made a move on him, but my guess is he will be too expensive for them.
Marek is the only personality on the fan 590 that I could listen to. He's very knowledgeable about hockey and doesn't allow his homerism get in the way of his opinions like other on air personalities.
How would he know for sure which team would be drafting who though?
Teams are meticulously driven to keep their picks a secret.
If he was using illegal listening devices, cameras or a drone (lol) I could understand that. Maybe he knew the guy was getting the information in a non legal manner and chose to use it.
