Why do they need to be unionized? Because they voted for a union. That's how it works in our country. So why do LCBO full time staff need to be unionized with publicly funded pensions?
You're also not considering all the other LCBO full-time positions and not just in-store. ie marketing, systems analysts, managers, etc.
If retail stores get their stock from LCBO distribution, can't the LCBO provide a website for where particular products are sold? It's not rocket science. There is even discrepancies between different LCBO stores where some don't carry products others do so the problem currently exists anyway.
And not all staff at the LCBO are union, the marketing, system analysts, etc you mention are not union members. Account Manager (Non-Union) posting starting salary is $64,745.00, same starting salary for an IT Senior Vendor Analyst, hardly excessive in Toronto. Now can experienced employees make more? Definitely, because less than $100K per year in Toronto isn't going to go far in hiring Senior level employees.
Not sure what you want from a website with regards to finding where particular products are sold, because the LCBO website already has that functionality. You look-up the product and then can click through to find out which stores have it in stock and see how many are in stock. Not every store carries the same product offerings, as they are tailored to the locale i.e. you can find more Greek wines at the LCBO on the Danforth than one in Mississauga. My understanding is they stock what sells with the shelf space they have in each store. Also, if your local store doesn't stock what you want, you can often order it for delivery to the store at no additional cost.
