So why do LCBO full time staff need to be unionized with publicly funded pensions?
You're also not considering all the other LCBO full-time positions and not just in-store. ie marketing, systems analysts, managers, etc.

If retail stores get their stock from LCBO distribution, can't the LCBO provide a website for where particular products are sold? It's not rocket science. There is even discrepancies between different LCBO stores where some don't carry products others do so the problem currently exists anyway.
Why do they need to be unionized? Because they voted for a union. That's how it works in our country.

And not all staff at the LCBO are union, the marketing, system analysts, etc you mention are not union members. Account Manager (Non-Union) posting starting salary is $64,745.00, same starting salary for an IT Senior Vendor Analyst, hardly excessive in Toronto. Now can experienced employees make more? Definitely, because less than $100K per year in Toronto isn't going to go far in hiring Senior level employees.

Not sure what you want from a website with regards to finding where particular products are sold, because the LCBO website already has that functionality. You look-up the product and then can click through to find out which stores have it in stock and see how many are in stock. Not every store carries the same product offerings, as they are tailored to the locale i.e. you can find more Greek wines at the LCBO on the Danforth than one in Mississauga. My understanding is they stock what sells with the shelf space they have in each store. Also, if your local store doesn't stock what you want, you can often order it for delivery to the store at no additional cost.

Skoob has the logic of a trust fund baby.

We must kiss Premier Douglas's feet for riding Ontario of all organized crime. That way he can privatize the LCBO to Cortellucci, Muzzo and company with peace, love and understanding. If not, then the outfits will want their piece of the action. I'd feel sorry for the convenience store owners, there's no Great Shat to protect them once the Provincial government steps aside.

As for the 407 ETR, I haven't heard that the CPP has sold their majority stake to Premiere Douglas.

Gotta admit The Great Shat does a lovely Swedish accent.
Sounds like someone started drinking early.

So as far as finding products it would be no different with other retailers. They will stock what sells locally as well. And if a website already exists to find products, then problem solved.

"because they voted for a union" doesn't answer the question as to why LCBO employees need to be unionized.

LCBO has over 7000 unionized staff out of approx 10,000 employees.
And if you look at the 20 pages of LCBO sunshine list members you can see where the money goes...that could be trimmed significantly as well.

Third party retailers don't get to be listed on the LCBO's website. That's up to the individual retailer. Do you think the convenience store down the street is going to stand up a website for people look up their inventory? No, they'll carry the cheap popular wines and if that's what you want then you'll be in luck, but if you want something good you won't be buying it at the corner store or the grocery store.

Here's a challenge see you can get Cune Reserva 2018 at any store in Ontairo that is not the LCBO. You'll have to go and look at Sobey's website, Loblaw's website, Metro's website, Food Basic's, Frechco's website and I'm sure some others. I'm not even sure if all those retailer's websites let you search for bottles at locations. If they don't you'll have to drive over to the location and take a look. Not a very efficient process.

The employees of the LCBO felt they needed to be represented by a Union, so the union drive succeeded. That's the reason they are unionized, period. It's not up to you to think they didn't need to be, it was up to them to decide they needed to be. That's how union certification works in Canada. Again, you might not agree with it, but that's how it works.

And good luck trimming employees, or employee salaries. Again just because you think $125K a year, or whatever LCBO employees are making, is too much doesn't mean it's too much. If it's a union job, it's a negotiated wage. If it's non-union then it's what the market sets for the wage. And if you are jealous of the wages, you are welcome to apply for a job at the LCBO through the Careers page on their website.

The Beer Store doesn't take in nearly that much in revenue. The Globe article you quoted is from almost 10 years ago. Financial statements for 2023 show total revenue of $462MM (2022-$452.5MM). Net profit of $1.9MM (2022-$5.7MM). Doesn't sound like a not for profit to me.
The contract with the Beer Store ends in a year.
DoFo could wait until the end of the contract and not pay any penalty but he wants it done before an election.
So it will cost Ontario $1 billion.

Every day there are more scandals.
He deleted emails, he should resign.

The LCBO pays Ontario workers really well and returns the province billions every year.
You hate it because it pays people well and helps pay for your pension and social services you live off, don't you?

DoFo just wants to pay back his donors with Ontario cash.

Why would someone be looking for exotic brands at a convenience store? Selections at super markets and convenience stores cater to the mainstream brands that the majority of drinkers typically buy.
In fact, the LCBO prevents many brands and products from being available. They fully control what is available. Producers need to pay big bucks to have their product appear on LCBO shelves. That cost is passed along to the consumer.

I'm not begrudging anyone who works and makes the money they do. But when it comes to public sector unions, that's our money. Those are employees that serve the public and provide the services we pay for. In most cases the public has no choice. When they strike the public is affected. That needs to stop.
We need to abolish public sector unions sooner rather than later.

The LCBO is the biggest purchaser of booze in the world, they get the best prices because of their size.
If you're worried about public money the LCBO is the best of both worlds, it gives Ontario billions in revenue and pays workers fair wages.

Why do you hate that?

No, but why should anyone exchange a significant portion of their life for an amount of money that doesn't provide them food, shelter, and savings? Don't be mad that labour has organized. Get organized yourself.
Does anyone force anyone to work for a particular employer for a particular amount of money?
No.

I'm not mad that labour has organized. I'm mad because I'm tired of being held hostage by them.

We need to get rid of public sector unions.

I never said to get rid of the LCBO.
There's no reason why staff needs to be unionized is what I said.

In this case, how are you held hostage by them? You have the freedom to brew your own booze, or not drink it at all. OR to drive to Quebec or New York and pay lower prices.

When unionized public servants go on strike, ie teachers, etc it impacts the public.
What part of that don't you understand?

Using your logic, why don't LCBO employees just find a job that pays them better if they have to threaten strikes to get more money?

Timmies?

Timmies?
Whatever jobs that value the skills they have developed by investing in themselves rather than dropping out of school and looking for someone to reward their lack of effort.

Explain how they are holding you hostage, skoob.

Are the nurses at the nursing home refusing to let you wander again?
When unionized public employees go on strike, such as teachers, students are kept out of school until the strike is over. It affects their education and it affects parents.

What part of that is too difficult for you to understand?
