Toddler and grandparents killed. Very sad.

Police have a no-chase policy for motorcycles. I think this should've been called off. Not because I think the perp would've stopped or not crashed, but because it could've been much worse with all those cops traveling the wrong way at a high rate of speed. We haven't heard the end of this.

Apparently there was an off duty DRP in the LCBO at the time who confronted the robber/robbers? The robber pulled a knife on the off duty cop who probably had already identified themselves as one. If it wasn't for that I speculate there wouldn't have been such a heavy and aggressive police response.

They probably wanted to arrest the suspect and put the beats on the perp for pulling a knife on their buddy-robbing the LCBO a distant second.

Pending the SIU investigation I suspect they will find all those DRP assholes at fault for continuing the pursuit once the perp entered the 401 going the wrong way and the family who lost their parents and child sue the fuck out of them. The transport driver who hit the perp head on should sue them for millions as well.

What a shitshow. 4 people dead over a couple of hundred dollars. I hope those officers get a strong talking to using some harsh words. Aka the maximum penalty for a police infraction.

Yeah lots of questions will be asked why they kept up a high speed pursuit going the wrong way on a major highway.
As far as the lawsuits go, the criminals family will probably get the biggest reward the way the fucked up justice system works.

No way that the criminal's family will get a single cent, when this nutcase pulled out a knife to threaten a cop.......PERIOD!!

But why on earth were the police helicopters not alerted? The cop cars should have pursued him, but in the Westbound Lanes and alerted the local cops to have a car waiting at each and every exit along the 401, just in case this idiot exits. But no doubt that this was going to be a catastrophe even if the cops did not pursue him. The further Westbound would mean higher congestion. An accident was inevitable, and 100% of the fault lies with this criminal for entering the opposite direction of the highway!!

No doubt who was at fault. Not questioning that.
But the courts seem to be putting innocent victims at the back of the line these days. The criminals family will probably put on a big sob story about him being an alcoholic, addiction, being triggered by the cop, blah blah blah. The usual cry baby sob story.
Time will tell.

To play devil's advocate once he gets on the 401 it becomes very much an unsafe situation. If they call off the chase I doubt he will just exit at the next exit and continue on his way. He will likely continue going until he wrecks on something or someone. At least being chased at a distance allows on coming traffic to see th oncoming lights and realize something is amiss and may give oncoming traffic the opportunity to pull over and avoid the madman.

The proper time to call off the chase would be well before he got near the highway, with the hope of him not taking the wrong way on the highway as an escape. Chances are he would've been easy to track down afterwards.

how do you expect them to just cover all that distance and in such a short amount of time?

Shocking accident. If this was just shoplifting, good lord. I mean, if the dude pulled a gun and robbed folks that way, that's a bigger deal, and would lead to a car chase....but when and where to end it is tricky. I think it was so unsafe, it should've been done before they even got near the highway..

This is the part I didn't understand. In the day and age, it seems like all they had to do was have the helicopter track them on the highway, and basically as well have cops ready at the next few exits with the spike things. Don't know if we have those in Canada, but I just found it puzzling.

Courtice is quite a distance from Whitby. He was on the Highway for around 20 minutes. In the meanwhile they could have informed the helicopter department as well the various regional police stations.

True, and that is what will be a part of the full investigation.

The entire chase was about 20 minutes long. Apparently the perp got on the 401 at Stevenson Road. Given the apparent high speed the chase was happening at, the wrong way chase on the highway was maybe at the most five minutes long?
