I liked it. They did a really good job overall and it will probably do well ratings wise.

the main storyline is a mash up of Fall out 3 & 4 and suffers from huge plot holes. But given how buggy the games are, kinda true to form if you think about it.

The brotherhood was too religious cult like, lacked moral grey nuance of the game, (& they would have totally killed the transgender character)

They could have had people walk through solid walls, doors or floors as a nod to the constant bugs in Bethesda games.

You finished it ??!! I'm close. I think I'm almost ready for Pac-Man. So much action .. I hope I can keep up. 😟
There was actually a Tetris movie on Apple+ a while ago. It's re-telling of how the game came about.

Never played the games but I've been thinking of checking it out since I'm a fan of Walton Goggins.

What do you guys think?

I still have two episodes left.

I wanna know the secret of Vault 31, so I will finish it today.
Never got to binging it. Fucking life always gets in the way.

I'm 2 episodes in. I am watching with someone who isn't a gamer and never played the games, and through them I can see all the mistakes they made.

First, the humor of the games isn't really there. At least not yet that I have seen. It comes across a little more darkly serious than the games did.

But the biggest issue is they didn't make it as accessible to people who were not already familiar with the game.
The games did a great job of introducing you to the world and the history of the vaults and how they came to be.
The way they structured the show, someone coming in knowing nothing is still very confused 2 episodes in. Who are vault dwellers really? How did they get there?
Then we jumped right in to the Brotherhood of Steel before our main character even left the vault. Who are these people? What is their story?
Then we jump to our Goul. What the fuck is he? Is this actually the same cowboy we saw at the beginning? How is he still alive for 200 years?
The person I am watching this with is ready to give up because there is no context for anything 2 full episodes in.

Yeah, I know all this stuff, and am just going with the story.
But you can't do that and expect first time viewers to the material to stick with you.

I don't know anything about Fallout, I didn't have time for video games. I will watch this series for two reasons. Walton Goggins is in it, he's like Paul Giamatti, every project he's in he makes better. The lead actress Ella Pernell can pass as Marion Cotillard's younger sister...that's plenty for me.

Maybe what happened in 2023 had a ripple effect in 2024. Audiences got tired of being spoonfed retread pablum, they wanted original content. I never expected an Alex Garland film to be No. 1 at the box-office. Just goes to show how massively talented Kirsten Dunst is.

The showrunners know their target audience very well and wanted to satisfy them first. Watering down the story to give it mass appeal would have been a mistake IMO. Besides, we're not in an era of broadcast TV where we have limited choices.

Didn't have to water down the story. Simply down to editing and order of presentation.
Like all Hollywood attempts at Game properties, they should have stuck more to the games. The games follow the Vault dweller, from vault to introduction to the world. This should have been replicated not changing from character perceptive to character perspective. It also should have been more chronological instead of hopping back and forth from pre-war to post war without actually explaining the context for the world, factions or character types.

That is what separated The Last of Us from this series. They stuck to the game extremely closely because the game already successfully tackled how to introduce the world to the audience. Which is why it was such a hit with people who never even heard of the game before.
Fallout didn't do this. They thought they knew how to introduce the world to the audience better than the game did, and they were wrong. It just leaves first time audiences confused.

All due respect to your opinion, but you sound overly critical. There are endless things that they "should have" done, but they chose not to. That's also the point of an RPG where you can shape the story however you like. I liked the pre-war scenes from the show because we never saw much of it in the games. Only Fallout 4 had a brief cut-scene and playable section at the start. The only game that is truly chronological is Fallout 3, where you see yourself being born, grow up and eventually leave the vault. The others games don't follow that structure yet are no worse for it. These are all choices and there's nothing wrong with any of them. How boring would the games be if they all had you being born, then start going on quests, etc.

If an adapatation is too close to the source material then the plot becomes predictable. If an adaptation strays too far from the source material, then they upset the fans. It's a needle that's tough to thread especailly for us not involved in screen writing.

I also liked The Last of Us, but didn't play the games. If the show stays too close to the games, then there's no reason to play it because I know how it all ends. Through YouTube, I know they made some major changes to the show like the episodes with the couple living together. They also changed one of the game's mechanics where you have need a gas mask in certain sections. There are tons of video game mechanics like this that won't work or would be boring in a live action show.

Just enjoy things for what they are instead of comparing it to the endless number of other shows out there. Or make your own fan fiction video if you're so inclined. It's amazing to see what passionate fans can make these days.

With all due respect, Fuck you.

This thread was all about what people thought of the show. You know their OPINION. And although you say "due respect to my opinion", your entire post is basically how I shouldn't voice my opinion, or even have an opinion and just enjoy the show as is.
You don't agree with my opinion that is fine, but it doesn't mean I should just shut up and agree with how things were done. If that were the case what was the point of this thread?

I agree with this. 100%. Couldn’t have explained it better myself.

I had a friend watch it and she was getting annoyed and it didn’t all come together for her until the last episode. At least that is what she said as a non-gamer

Take a fucking pill man. It's a show based on a game. I didn't tell you to shut the fuck up BTW. Sorry that my OPINION triggered you so much.

My point was that it's very easy to criticize other people for how we want things to go when we're not involved in the production. I work in the creative industry (not in TV or movies, but still creative) and it's much harder than you can fathom. You push the envelope too much and people complain, you keep the status quo and people complain, You don't make a show at all and people still complain. There's always a milliion opinions that can never be satisfied. The more you try to satisfy everyone, the less you satisfy. It's impossible to satisfy someone's head canon that they've built up over the years.

I wasn't insulting you when I said if you have a better idea for the show that you could make your own. Lots of people do that now and often do a better job that the actual production company.

So it's no wonder we have so much of the same franchise TV and movies because no one wants to take risks anymore and people still have problems with it.

Yeah, I can see the corniness. There's some of that corniness in the source material though. I didn't play 76, but I think it was criticized for trying to shoehorn multiplayer into a single player narrative. So you kind of wandered around and had to find other human players to go on quests with. Not sure if they've fixed that in later updates.

Really?

This kind of sounds like that to me, and others who read it.
I'm done with you.
Well, you're the only one who told me to fuck off so....

You're seem to be looking to be upset over nothing. Anyway, no sense arguing over this.

I have not played the game, so for me it was just a series. And I loved it. Sometimes it is good to not know the story of what you are watching. But even in cases where I have played and know the story - like Witcher for example, I didn't really have a problem. I guess I am just not overtly critical about these things.
I feel the same about many shows that are base on games, Halo was a prime example of people pissing and moaning that the show was not followed exactly to the canon. I like to watch the show and see it succeed or fail on its merits. I also skip what the gamers have to say about too.
