Whats going on with the prices of Rolex Watches

So I will be purchasing a Rolex Submariner Stainless Steal with Date, 41mm, at the local Rolex Dealer it's $12300. But know one has any, I can buy one brand new Box , Papers, tags, $17500 .
My question is WHY, this will be my 3rd Rolex and turning 60 in July, do I wait? or pay?

From my understanding regarding the shortage of the hand-crafted luxury timepieces, it’s an issue of divergent supply and demand.
Something happened in 2020 that halted production. People decided to spend money on stuff because they couldn’t go out and spend money on stuff.
Demand went even higher on the grey market, (just like the Air Jordans). Bottom line…their production can’t keep up. That being said, I’ve read that they are building another factory.

People are waiting a year or two for the “affordable” models, ie stainless steel.

I was in Vegas 2 weeks ago at the Rolex store in Ceasars forum shops. They had 6 people working there and as soon as I entered the store, I was told they only had one watch available for sale that day. Can’t remember which model but it was 42k USD. Everything else in the entire store was display only. Needless to say, I wasn’t able to get a Skydweller that day.

Rolex is overpriced, but nothing in comparison to Patek Philippe. Each piece goes for hundreds of thousands, if not millions. That is the true definition of the rich buying grossly overpriced goods to show off their wealth.

Getting a bit off topic here, but I love how when the Swatch X Omega (or was it Omega X Swatch) was released they were immediately sold out and became available on the grey market for half the price of an entry level stainless steel Omega even though Swatch issued a statement that this was not a limited run and more will be released.

Now, I have a Seamaster as one of my fave timepieces and my SO wanted to get me a Swatch X Omega to wear when i do more physical activity because of the nylon band. She reached out to someone on either FB Marketplace or Kijiji and the guy asked $1,200 for a $350 watch. My SO was willing to pay $450-500 for it, but she told the seller not at that price. He then had the gal to ask, "how much can you afford?" She laughed and told him "I can afford a lot more than that, but I am not paying $1,200 for a $300 watch.

Needless to say, she bought it for me 3-4 months later at cost from the Swatch store in Sherway. The girl helping her at Sherway said that a few weeks after they were sold, many people were returning them to the store as the credit card bill came in and the buyers weren't able to sell for what they wanted.

Now my advice, buy the Rolex, but it sounds like you can wait a few months as it isn't something you immediately need.

Buy whatever your fragile ego requires. I never look at anybody's watches and I haven't worn a watch myself in years. I do notice that the only people who look at other people's watches are those who also own an expensive watch. It is like a fraternity of sorts.

I admit I did buy a Rolex when I lived in New York. A guy in the office was continuously flaunting his his Rolex so that motivated me to buy one also. I came in and made exaggerated gestures to show off the watch including pointing at it and whispering 'Rolex'. I don't think the gesturing pissed him off as much as me admitting that I bought mine from a street vendor for $15.

I consider spending a lot of money on a watch similar to buying jewelry, like buying a bracelet. You're not buying it for the functionality, your buying it as a gift to yourself. You have disposable income to spend on a luxury. Maybe it even has some investment value. But this is what affluent people do.
