I agree this has gone way too far. But Hamas could pretty much force a ceasefire by releasing all the hostages. At that point Israel would no longer have any real incentive to continue the hostilities, and world pressure for an extended ceasefire would prevail. (at least until Hamas regroups and breaks it again...)

But Hamas prefers to play the victim card, and hold on to the hostages for whatever future value they may have in demanding an exorbitant ratio of Gazan detainees in exchange for the few hostages who are still alive.

Israel has shown in the past they will not tolerate their citizens being held hostage, and will try to free them by whatever means necessary.

Personally I have great sympathy for the Gazan innocents who are being punished by this war, but none at all for Hamas and the Gazan citizens who agree with their "exterminate all the Jews" philosophy.

Netanyahu has repeatedly said he needs to 'finish the job' and kill everyone he thinks is Hamas regardless of whether the hostages are released.
According to the latest reports, they are using AI to target every male of age in Gaza.
