Former President Barack Obama has now twice warned President Joe Biden that his reelection prospects are in trouble.
You don't need to be in the cult to support him.
There are lots of people who think he's an unhinged lunatic, but that they can control him. Or outlast him and take over when he's broken things in a way they support.
If you want women controlled, theocracy imposed, or just "those people" put in their place, why not support someone who might get you that, even if it's risky?
Lots of people don't like democracy because it means you have to compromise with other people.
Even if he's a lunatic, if he breaks things enough that the institutions can't stop you when it's your turn, why not support the loose cannon?
But the issue he is struggling with is that they are choosing Trump - the medically incompetent one.

Hard to believe that the MI poll is accurate, given MI's voting results in past elections and the fact that this election is a re match.
Either there's something local affecting the vote in MI or that poll is click bait.

The Economist page he linked to is also an aggregator of many polls. It says that right up front.
As for your main point, yes.
While the polling is early and sporadic (you can see that all of those go back months and some to last October), Trump is ahead in the battleground states.
This is a tragedy of the US system, but is important nonetheless.

It does show Biden leading by 1 point, but since its just a national poll its more or less meaningless
