Umm, terb.CC ? 😂
China isn't the enemy, our own governments are, in fact, all of them combined together are. They just needed an easy boogeyman, so, "omg, Russia, Omg China!"
The .cc domain is for the Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands, which is an Australian territory. There's only 600 people living there. Most of them are probably the Terb admins and mods :p

Part of the "concern" is that TikTok's parent could be compelled to share its user data with the Chinese Communist Party on a whim because of its National Security Law. Or that the CCP is actively using the app to spread pro-China propaganda. As if it's only China that does this?

In Canada, we have the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act or PIPEDA, which affects US tech companies like Google, Facebook, etc.. How well (if at all) that legislation actually works is a totally different story.
This isn't a "well we do it, so I guess we should let them do it too" sort of situation. It's a little more nuanced and the stakes are a little higher than that. I certainly wouldn't want someone with that kind of thinking in charge of national security

Obviously, iits a lot more nuanced than that, but you remember where you're asked this question right? National and data security is a complex issue that can't be discussed intelligently on here.

Fair enough. And I wouldn't want me in charge of national security either

Looks like McCarthyism to me. It is like saying the Russians are spying on us. The Chinese are spying on us. ( USA/Canada ) The reality is that the British are spying on us, so are the French, Germans. Italians, Israelis and 50 other countries spying on us.
..................and we are spying on them.

serious question

what security concerns?
Chinese law requires all Chinese companys to turn over information on demand. No, they apparently haven't tested that - so what?

are the Chines spying on what I watch on TikTok?
One never knows - do one?

I sure hope it doesn't affect TikTok in Canada, cuz I depend on watching TikTok on my tablet in bed for at least 45 minutes around midnight before I feel sleepy enough to actually turn off the lights and try to fall asleep...

By downloading the app, you give them to collect all sorts of personal data. Now many apps do the same thing, however TikTok has a lot of subscribers and the Chinese government has the ability to request access to all of that information. Will they? Do you trust the China? I'm guessing the US government doesn't.

"TikTok doesn’t operate in China. But since the Chinese government enjoys significant leverage over businesses under its jurisdiction, the theory goes that ByteDance, and thus indirectly, TikTok, could be forced to cooperate with a broad range of security activities, including possibly the transfer of TikTok data.

“It’s not that we know TikTok has done something, it’s that distrust of China and awareness of Chinese espionage has increased,” said James Lewis, an information security expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “The context for TikTok is much worse as trust in China vanishes.”

When Rob Joyce, the National Security Agency’s director of cybersecurity, was asked by reporters in December to articulate his security concerns about TikTok, he offered a general warning rather than a specific allegation.

“People are always looking for the smoking gun in these technologies,” Joyce said. “I characterize it much more as a loaded gun.”

The US government has said it’s worried China could use its national security laws to access the significant amount of personal information that TikTok, like most social media applications, collects from its US users.

The laws in question are extraordinarily broad, according to western legal experts, requiring “any organization or citizen” in China to “support, assist and cooperate with state intelligence work,” without defining what “intelligence work” means."

I find it ironic that the US government is suddenly so worried about privacy ...

I guess they don't like the competition.

To suggest that Tik Tok has contributed to the divisive political problems in the US is laughable.

I have enjoyed Tik Tok since one of my coworkers showed it to me. I like the short videos on an amazing variety of subjects as well as disappointment of the younger gen upset that I don't stick to Facebook.

[BTW: The USA PATRIOT Act expired in March 2020 without being reauthorized. However, federal law enforcement agencies still have most of the authorities granted by the act. The surveillance infrastructure created by the Patriot Act also still exists.]

Why can't an American billionaire launch a similar app?
So apparently Tiktok has a secret algorithm that allows them to upload mostly funny and interesting videos, and leave the garbage videos behind.
Other apps havent been able to do so yet. Instagram Reels has come close but they're still a notch below Tiktok

Yes. They can also modify content to create dissention, push propaganda, limit criticism, even store it for blackmail later. Same reason they had to sell grindr.
so how is the problem going to be solved if they sell it?

it just means that someone else will be capable of those shenanigans

aren't we overestimating the capability of any social media software to influence people?

I know that lefties are easily bamboozled :)

but normal people are not that gullible to be influenced by a video they see on TikTok

I would say that it's very difficult to change someones opinion or view on almost any subject

just look at TERB

did anybody ever succeed in changing somebody's mind on any topic?
