A Ukrainian immigrant is in shock after she awoke Tuesday morning to find her car vandalized, its windows broken and its tires punctured. The vandals did not attempt to take anything. The Toyota has a small Israeli flag sticker on the back bumper.
“I feel that I’m in Germany in 1937,” Victoria Adamov told the National Post. “It’s like a time machine.”
Adamov was born in Ukraine and lived in Israel for 10 years before coming to Canada in 2000. She lives on a quiet cul-de-sac near Dufferin and Steeles just north of Toronto with her husband, her 13-year-old son, and two pets. It’s an area she describes as “mixed-culture” and not a Jewish neighbourhood.
“I know for sure I’ve been targeted,” she said. “Somebody came just for my car. And for us, obviously.”
Footage from her home security camera shows a dark car driving up to the house at 3:27 a.m. Two figures in masks and hoods hop out, quickly and calmly break the Toyota’s windows, then return to their vehicle for a tool that they use to puncture the tires before driving away. The crime takes less than a minute.
Adamov didn’t hear anything, and only learned of the incident when a neighbour who was walking her dog texted her later that morning. Adamov called York Regional Police, and the Hate Crimes Unit is now investigating.
“We’re all in shock,” she said. “When I came to Canada over 20 years ago I couldn’t realize we would face a real pogrom … in Canada, where everybody used to talk about multiculturalism and love to each other.”
She added: “Never ever have I experienced so much antisemitism as I’m experiencing now.”
Adamov said that when Russia attacked Ukraine in 2022, she put a Ukrainian flag on her car in solidarity. “And it was absolutely no problem. But as soon as I identify myself as belonging to Israel, here is the problem.”
She added that it was difficult to put her feelings into words. “It’s hard to verbalize my feelings, my fear. And I’ve never been a fearful person. I’ve always stood for the right thing on the right side of history. But today I am scared.
“Because they know my address, I don’t know what to expect tomorrow. Maybe somebody will come during the night and set my house on fire. Maybe somebody will wait for me in the park when I’m walking the dog. Honestly I’m shaken. I don’t know how can we leave the house, how can we go somewhere. I don’t know how to live, how to breathe. We are in shock.”
The vandals broke all the windows on the car but took nothing.
Adamov said she feels singled out by the attack, adding that she’s never engaged in arguments online, or done anything that would make enemies.
“I think it’s pointless to argue with people who have different opinions,” she said. “I didn’t have any conflicts. I just had an Israeli flag sticker on the back of my car.”
She feels that Canada is not doing enough to safeguard the safety of its citizens.
“As long as our Prime Minister doesn’t say anything, it will be worse, and it’s getting worse by the minute. They used to talk about Islamaphobia all the time but nobody’s talking about antisemitism, nobody says it’s zero tolerance to anti-Semitism. What are they waiting for? Till somebody will be murdered?”
She added: “I want my voice to be heard. This nonsense must be stopped. High levels of government must act now. Tomorrow it’s going to be too late.”

The penalty should be the cost to restore the car back to its original state (or a replacement car) plus the maximum penalty for pain and suffering. The amount for pain and suffering depends on what the law allows and/or jurisprudence.
For example, can you imagine if someone sticks a NAZI and/or a Ukrainian flag on your car.
