Liz Magill, the president of University of Pennsylvania, voluntarily stepped down from the helm of the Ivy League school on Saturday, according to an announcement from board chair Scott Bok.

She said that students who expressed their support for Hamas and what they stood for were not necessarily violating campus policy, and that they had the right to free speech.


In response to Magill’s resignation, Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, dean for leadership studies at the Yale School of Management, said in a statement that Magill and her peers on Tuesday were underprepared before the House committee.

“University leaders have an elevated duty to fortify the truth and protect their campus communities from hate, threats, and violence. Freedom of expression is NOT an absolute right anywhere in society. Hate speech is different from speech,” he said. “

She was right, and her being forced to resign is dumb.
Yes, she could have tried to answer the bad faith questions with something more politically "savvy", but she went with the truth instead.

The climate in universities these days is not good overall.
Canadian universities are suffering funding issues, cutting programs and relying more and more on foreign students.
Students are trickier and demand more for 'their money'.
Adding in an attempt to stifle free debate in what is supposed to be the one area where you are free to discuss all ideas is just bad news.
