She said that students who expressed their support for Hamas and what they stood for were not necessarily violating campus policy, and that they had the right to free speech.

In response to Magill’s resignation, Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, dean for leadership studies at the Yale School of Management, said in a statement that Magill and her peers on Tuesday were underprepared before the House committee.

“University leaders have an elevated duty to fortify the truth and protect their campus communities from hate, threats, and violence. Freedom of expression is NOT an absolute right anywhere in society. Hate speech is different from speech,” he said. “

Our local library had a sign on the washroom entrance that said "trans welcome". I noticed to-day that the sign is gone (the menorah is also MIA). Christmas tree is still there. What does all this mean?

When the speech is calling for violence against a certain group, yes.

Remember that there's an academic code of conduct. You can't harass and threaten other members of the university community.
When people say they feel threatened by other people wearing Palestinian flags and Keffiyeh's, when people say 'free Palestine' or 'from the river to the sea' is hate speech, that should be reflected on those accusing, not on the accused.

We are witnessing a mass McCarthy like attack on free speech in universities and the media, the likes of which we haven't seen since McCarthy.

It used to be that universities were the place to openly express one's ideas so that the truth

I agree that there seems to be a double standard.

She was right, and her being forced to resign is dumb.
Yes, she could have tried to answer the bad faith questions with something more politically "savvy", but she went with the truth instead.
Unfortunate and not a good sign.

The climate in universities these days is not good overall.
Canadian universities are suffering funding issues, cutting programs and relying more and more on foreign students.
Students are trickier and demand more for 'their money'.
Adding in an attempt to stifle free debate in what is supposed to be the one area where you are free to discuss all ideas is just bad news.
