Killing him was an accident but the intention to kick him was there. Could be considered manslaughter?

Apparently the guy that kicked him, Matthew Petgrave, is a well known dirty player (lots of penalties, booted out of games, etc).

He was born in Toronto.

I don't have the link but look for the other post on this. Someone post a longer video. Look carefully at Petgraves's reaction after the hit. He looks like someone who knows he fucked up. It took me 3-4 viewing to realize that.

Yet i have watched hockey for nearly 50 years now, i started very young, and never saw someone intentionally trying to hit another player with his skate. You would have to be a maniac to do that. Is it the case here?

WTF? That was so senseless, so dangerous. Who does an open ice kick to the head like that? I'm not one to rush to judgement, but I think there's grounds for criminal charges here. RIP

I've watched it, played hockey for 20yrs & reffed for another 20yrs. In my opinion it was a total freak accident as the guy with the skate got clipped & knocked way off balance.
IMHO no way there was intent to slice the throat.
I've clipped people & sent them flying higher than from a hard hit. As a ref, ive been clipped by accident while skating backwards & did a summer sault.

I will say I totally back the call for neck guards all players & on ice officials.
The NHL & other leagues should fall under basic H&S Min of Labor rules on PPE
Chin straps done up properly, ear guards on the helmets that they play with all through minor hockey, neck guards, full face shields or cages & mouth guards.
Neck guards are mandated in ontario minor hockey for years for players 1st, the on ice officials about 12yrs ago after a linesman has his throat slashed in an ice incident.
NHLPA needs to rethink their views on player safety. They grow up playing with full face shields, neck guards, ear guards & mouth guards. All need to be worn properly or its a penalty & or game misconduct.
Kids follow what popular NHL players do.
Chin straps way too loose, mouth guards sticking out like a chew toys etc.
I've done emergency 1st aid on the ice as a trainer & referee to many times from kids not wearing equipment properly.
There's my rant

Hockey tries to be too macho. First, they called Jacques Plante soft because he wore a mask in goal, then there were so many players who refused to wear a helmet (Craig McTavish being the last), then visors. To be frank, I'm surprised we haven't had more deaths in hockey. I don't understand why they don't wear full cages. Do they want to lose teeth or an eye? And neck guards....they can be uncomfortable, but could save a life. Remember Trent McCleary who played for Montreal and got a slap shot to the throat? He nearly died because the shot crushed his throat and collapsed a lung.

Would the game be significantly different if everyone wore better and safer equipment? I heard guys like Don Cherry saying you'd see more stick violence, which I guess could be possible...But I'd also say that EVERY player wore a mask until they went into junior. I think NCAA college hockey requires a cage as well. So, it isn't like it would be a massive transition for players to do so.

The sddest part of this incident, if Adam Johnson was still playing in North America, he may have lived.

Hockey is a fringe sport in the UK, the medics probably had no knowledge in dealing with a critical life threatening skate gash. I seriously doubt they would have had surgical pliers to stanch a perforated Carotid Artery either. Adam Johnson bled to death while the medics were helpless to do anything about it.

Clint Malarchuck had his Carotid Artery severed, right away the flat nosed surgical pliers went in. Malarchuk passed out from lack of blood to the brain, he ended up in a 12 hr coma, but he survived. He's still around to tell the tale.

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Watch it again on YouTube. But this time, go to settings and play it at .25 speed. Not a chance Petgrave got clipped to the point of forcing his left leg to elevate where his skate made contact with Johnson's neck. It was an open ice hit by a dirty player (which has been proven time and again) that caused the death of another player. I've never seen such a reckless play like that. It was completely avoidable.

I've watched it several times & still think it was an freak accident. You would have a hard time proving intent of him trying to slice his neck or head area with his skate.... again IMHO
Everyone is open to have there own opinion
Lawyers make millions daily in court on based on points of opinion & viewpoint. And at times Judges who are all former lawyers, will side with an opinion that most do not agree with. We see this happen in Canada & the States on a regular basis.
No different in hockey years ago with Gretzky's high stick on Gilmour or Brett Hull in the crease to win Stanley cup against Buffalo

Everybody has seen checks like that hundreds of times, never results in a leg flying out like that.
Looked 100% intentional to me. Obviously he didn't think it through but that doesn't excuse him of the consequences.
He should be charged with manslaughter.

I don't think there was "intent" to slice Johnson's neck. I do however think, that Petgrave could face serious discipline or even charges of some sort. In the same way a player can be suspended for an illegal check to the head.

And yes, it's totally different than the non-call by Kerry Fraser on Gretzky's high stick or Hull's foot in the crease goal.

Malarchuck was indeed lucky in his bad luck. A carotid cut can lead to death in a matter of 5 to 15 seconds in most case. I think in this case Johnson would have died even in the NHL because the hit was so hard. We will never know if I'm right or wrong.

Time will tell if Johnson had both the carotid and jugular cut. Which is fatal with pretty much zero chance of survival. Or he had the carotid cut but yet so severed that he did not had enough second before intervention.

I now have watch the hit in slow motion over and over. The player who did that wanted to hurt. Of course not to kill but it turned bad. He should be banned for life because it is now revealed that he is (was) an absolute dirty player. This hit seems to me intentional of a player just trying to stop an opponent at any cost.

It looked more like a martial arts kick than a bodycheck/hockey hit.
