Holding doors open for people

I have a habit for opening doors for people or making sure the person behind has hold of the door before I let go. I am such a good guy ! :)

However ...

I must admit that if I'm in the elevator - unless a hot girl is approaching - I do not extend the same curtesy by pressing the door open as people are approaching. I have on occasion feigned confusion looking for the door open button as the doors slowly close.

When I'm in an elevator and just before it reaches the ground floor, I will stand directly in front of the doors, because there is always someone with their heads buried in their cell phones attempting to enter the car when doors open with out looking, totally selfish on their part, they are startled to see me standing there.

I used to get upset when my random acts of kindness wasn’t acknowledged, but in the last three years I’ve learned to being curious rather than judgmental. Nobody really knows what others are going through or have experienced. Engagement can be an opportunity for harm.

Living in the country, I’m used to looking people in the eyes and saying hello. Doing the same thing in the city isn’t always met with the same reaction. In fact, I remember how one elderly woman took my nod of acknowledgment (after she stared at me so long I thought she knew me) then became verbally abusive. She spoke about how I was going to hell and the world was ending. Obviously, she needed to share and was ready to engage. So, I can see why woman may not want to engage with a strange man at a door.

That said, I’d rather contribute kindness to society than indifference.

I have literally purposely stood there and let them walk into me with my arm extended. Once they hit my hand, I let out a large and really loud “whoa, what are you doing?????” Scares the shit out of them. Then all the “sorry sorry sorry” lines happen. 😂😂😂

Funny (read pathetic) story, held door for a senior just last week at the mall, this teen douchbag cut the senior off and proceeded through the door with a smirk on his face, not the best decision but grabbed him by the scruff, pulled him back through the door and told him what an idiot he was. he looked scared but said nothing
Manners are a lost art and young people, at least far too many, have none

Told the stories before, but they never get tired for me. Women. Held the door open for a lady and her grown up daughter Karen and Karen junior ,going into a mall. They were deep in conversation and totally ignored me and the fact that I was their chivalrous doorman. As they barged past me I said "pardon me?" The mother said "I didn't say anything". I said " Oh. I thought you said thank you" She screamed "I am talking to my daughter".
second incident. Held the door open behind me for a lady going into a bank. She looked at me like I was something she stepped in and made a big display of trying to waddle around me. I said "you don't say thank you?" she said "for blocking the door?" I said "for holding the door open for you .FUCK OFF". we went our way into the bank. Turned out she was the manager.

I used to get that at work from a lady from a certain part of the world. She would barge straight into me. I finally said " in every country in the world, people wait for other people to get out of the elevator before trying to get in". She looked mildly contrite.

Manners are a reflex. If you have them you don’t think about it, you just do it whether it’s holding a door for someone or thanking them, etc. Most people don't have that reflex.
Even as a woman holding a door, most people don’t thank me. Sure it can be frustrating and it feels like they didn’t deserve the kind gesture. But each act (or the absence of one) displays our character, and I'm quite happy with mine. I would be embarrassed to be seen as a person with no manners.

Not only did she hold the door for me but she also helped me lift my bike down the stairs.

Why do they have stairs in Union Station?

Really? Most don’t say thank you??? Are you right Downtown??? I’m outside touring and hold doors open all the time and most always say thank you.

I didn’t know if the guys saying they don’t get thanks were not getting them because they are guys but you have the same experience so that has me curious.

LOL. What are they supposed to have?
There are escalators, elevators and ramps but the entrance I used that time didn't have any of those, only a short flight of stairs. It also didn't have automatic doors either. Yes, I also asked the young lady to hold the door for me as well. She was happy to help.

I understand that the door you used didn't have what you were looking for. But there has to be a handicap entrance somewhere.

I'm sure there are but I happened to be at that particular door at that time and a cute helpful young lady also happened to be right there. BTW: The staircase was only 3 steps but I thought I would ask the young lady to help anyway and she was happy to oblige.

I have on occasions used the elevators/escalators and there is a long winding ramp inside the subway station at Union Station.

If you're noticing stuff like this then you're officially an old fart :ROFLMAO: The reality is that everyone can be inconsiderate and self-centered. Younger people don't have a monopoly on that. When we were younger we behaved basically the same way and our elders grumbled about it too. If you expect people to acknowledge you for small acts of kindness then you're doing it wrong.

If they don't say "thank you" just say "your welcome" as they walk through the door.
This is exactly what I've done. I make it obvious that i'm saying it to them.
And we're not just talking about Chivalry for guys opening doors for women. It's just good manners, no matter who you're opening the door for.

Some idiot knocked over my bike full of groceries. A woman came and helped me picked up all the stuff. I gave her two large oranges.

I went against my own word yesterday, I came out of my building door and saw a guy who lives on another floor approaching with his arms full of groceries and held the door open for him - he thanked me. On the street car I got up and offered an asian/canadian woman with her kid my seat so they could sit together, got no thanks
