This is maybe China’s greatest weakness. Xi is the new Mao, he has destroyed the countries ability to make decisions and execute policy because he’s the only one that can make decisions. When ministers disappear it’s because they got in front of Xi.

Canada is a technically sophisticated first world economy tightly linked to the largest economy in the world. Canada has many issues, none fatal.

Or your next door neighbour is the US. Who we also happen to rely heavily on, way too heavily for trade. Harper was smart to have worked on getting the EU trade agreement. Others have tried to wean us off the US. Like JT/India.

I’d say the US, EU, Japan, India, Australia, South Korea represent a pretty significant market of countries currently looking to contain China.

Basically the G7 and a couple minions. Hardly the world.

To add 3) They have began teaching Mandarin in Africa and have a growing exchange student program. They have plans to fill in gaps.

I don’t see immigration filling the gap.

You are imposing your capitalist mind set. They have different goals and aspirations and they started their industrialization 100 tears after the west.

I think they would be more successful adopting more market based alternatives but their values are no necessarily ours. Notwithstanding I do belive that China will rise again.

Look at it from a GDP or consumer market perspective, 9 of the top 10 economies are in this group and most of the next 10. I’m not sure the Middle East or Africa will be much help to China.

A couple of points:

1) I heard the 1 child policy never really worked in the rural ares.
2) Many advanced economies are de-populating. Canada is filling the void with immigration, Japan is not.

Japan is still highly xenophobic and would prefer to go extinct as a species rather than have “gaijin” immigration.
Extinction is looming, more diapers are used for seniors than infants, 3:1.

Without exploiting the middle-east and africa, those top 10 economies won't be top 10 economies.

Your economy is heavily integrated with the worlds largest economy, it’s not a bad thing. In some ways the East and West of Canada are more tightly integrated with the US than they are with each other.

China is on a more dire trajectory than Japan has been on and without the high end skills. Japan is extremely Xenophobic, I would argue so I China and much of the world.

“Bad thing”. Nope, not at all. Bit on trade, we have needed to wean ourselves off for sometime. I sometimes chuckle topic specific when Canadians look down their noses at the US. I hope the U.S. and its electorate sort their shit out while there’s time.

And yep, as we always do, have for decades we follow the US by a generation in virtually every trend. Look at the US around 2000. We could also look at housing prior to 2008, or consumer debt..at the start of 2008 US debt to income was 171%. We are a little over that today.

The US in 2000. That’s Canada today. Especially when it comes to division/polarization ( east/west, and politics).

in my perfect world, I’d take the best of both.

Basically the same thing is happening in Canada but I don't hear you scream the end is near.

They will experience difficulties but will be fine.

1: It's nowhere near as bad, a birth rate of 1 is a lot different from, what 1.65ish?
2: People don't scream about the end being near, they scream about doing something about it like bringing in immigrants. China is too hostile for that to happen and at 1.X billion [who knows the true numbers] there are not enough immigrants in the world to fix that.
