I am not sure what Newsom thought he was going to accomplish with this "debate" (other than raise his profile for a future presidential run).
It was never going to go down well for him since DeSantis was bound to pull shit like this but it will just get framed as Newsom whinging.
This argument always cracks me up.
There have been 1000 or so people prosecuted for acts on Jan 6.
The government has never claimed all of them are guilty of the same thing and has charged people differently as appropriate.
The ones who were doing sedition got charged with sedition.
It doesn't have to make sense. The pitch is to the people - like Dutch or Kirk - who now run the area committees of the GOP. They're part of the Trump Cult. Reality has no bearing.

As to Frankfooter's comment, the GOP has been cutting public education since Watergate. If you dumb down those that cannot afford a private education, they will believe anything you tell them.
The GOP and the Republicans would love to see a more uneducated electorate. They would prefer schools to instill "family and moral values". It really is the only chance they have to win elections.
