Vegan influencer Zhanna Samsonova has reportedly “died of starvation” after subsisting exclusively off a diet of exotic fruit in Malaysia, according to her friends and family.

She was 39.

The Russian national — who frequently promoted raw foods on social media where she was known to her millions of viewers on TikTok, Facebook and Instagram as Zhanna D’Art — reportedly died July 21 after finally seeking medical treatment during a tour in Southeast Asia, according to local media outlet reports.

“A few months ago, in Sri Lanka, she already looked exhausted, with swollen legs oozing lymph,” one unidentified friend told Newsflash. “They sent her home to seek treatment. However, she ran away again. When I saw her in Phuket, I was horrified.”

Her friend added, “I lived one floor above her and every day I feared finding her lifeless body in the morning. I convinced her to seek treatment, but she didn’t make it.”


Samsonova’s mother attributed her daughter’s passing to “cholera-like infection.” However, her official cause of death has not been declared.

A proponent of uncooked herbivorous fare, the Kasan native claimed she ate a “completely raw vegan diet” for the last four years, consuming just “fruits, sunflower seed sprouts, fruit smoothies and juices.”


Meanwhile, a friend claimed that for the last seven years, Samsonova had only eaten the giant, sweet jackfruit and durian, a spiky, mace-like fruit known for its custardy meat and noxious odor.

“I see my body and mind transform every day,” Samsonova had gushed while describing her restrictive eating regimen. “I love my new me, and never move on to the habits that I used to use.”

The foodfluencer said her raw foods regimen was reportedly inspired by seeing “peers” who looked a lot older than their ages, which she attributed to their “junk food” diets.




She used social media to spread her raw diet doctrine, describing: “I eat simple food, although I have a lot of experience as a raw food chef. I love creating my own recipes and inspiring people to eat healthier.”

Unfortunately, her friends believe her so-called healthy food choices were to blame for her death.

“You don’t need to be a doctor to understand where this will lead,” said one pal of her all-durian and jack fruit diet.

“Zhanna’s idle stagnation was causing her to melt before our eyes, but she believed everything was fine,” theorized another. “Only her eyes, merry eyes, and gorgeous hair compensated for the dreadful sight of a body tortured by idiocy. Forgive me if it sounds harsh.”


While a raw foods diet can have multiple health benefits — including weight loss, improved heart health and a lower risk of diabetes — there are downsides to this regimen, especially when not well planned, according to Healthline.

These include deficiencies in calcium and Vitamin D, which are needed for strong bones. This can also lead to suboptimal B12 levels, which can result in anemia, nervous system damage, infertility and, somewhat paradoxically, heart disease.

A study published earlier this month in the Journal of Nutrition found that 100% of participants on a raw vegan diet ingested less than the recommended 2.4 mcg of vitamin B12 per day.

Despite the potential downsides to Samsonova’s diet, many of her devoted followers refused to believe her eating choices led to her death, instead claiming that she was killed by chemicals in the fruit she ate.


Samsonova’s family is awaiting a medical report and a death certificate that will determine her official cause of death.

Samsonova wouldn’t be the first to starve to death from a raw foods diet.


Last year, vegan Florida mother Sheila O’Leary, 38, was sentenced to life in prison after starving her 18-month-old son to death by feeding him only small amounts of fruits and vegetables.

  • Cow's milk and non-dairy milk are not nutritionally equal, according to new research.
  • Scientists found that plant-based milks often have less vitamin D, calcium and protein.
  • But plant-based milk drinkers don't need to despair — there are other ways to get these essential nutrients.
The plant-based milk industry is booming, and new milks seem to be cropping up everywhere — from the old standbys of almond milk and oat milk, to newfangled pistachio milk and cashew milk. The options are endless.

But few of these alternatives compare to cow's milk in terms of nutrition, according to data presented on July 24 at the American Society for Nutrition Conference in Boston. The data has not yet been published.

"I thought going into this that the manufacturers would have been looking at cow's milk and trying to match it with these products," Dr. Abigail Johnson, who researches nutrition at the University of Minnesota, told Insider.

Instead, there's so much variability in the nutritional content of non-dairy products, "I think that the flavor and the mouthfeel and the other properties are probably what's mostly driving the development in these products and not so much like if they are a nutritional match for cow's milk," Johnson said.

Cow's milk is more nutrient dense than most plant-based alternatives
Scientists analyzed the nutrition labels for 237 plant-based milk products from 23 different manufacturers. But only 28 of the beverages were comparable or better than dairy milk when it came to vitamin D, calcium and protein.

Of the plant-based milks, oat milk was the plant milk most commonly fortified with calcium and vitamin D — 76% of the oat milks analyzed contained both nutrients. The runner ups were soy milks and almond milks. But the plant-based milks were highly variable.

Plant-based milks tended to have less protein than cow's milk as well — a fact that's "been known," said Johnson. Cow's milk contains 8 grams of protein per serving. Soy milk is typically equivalent in protein, but other plant-based milks contain only 2 grams of protein on average, Johnson said.

How unfortunate for Zhanna Samsonova. It reminds me of a few women I know, and I know they are not healthy and they need different type of help, but they are in denial state and don't want help, and yet they do but only by Validation.

Their Denial Syndrome is just a vicious black hole spiral downward to an abyss that even Duffy Duck or Wile E Coyote cannot escape.

Hard to find good liver these days.

I actually got some nice calf's liver at Loblaws a few weeks ago. You just have to be sure not to overcook and dry the shit out of it.

Slow cook a mess of onions with it and enjoy. Salt, pepper, garlic, cajun spice and a touch of maple syrup.

I hate liver, but raw milk is cool, but hard to find so I go with oat and almond.

A raw diet consumes too much of the body's energy to digest, I can understand the starvation point. If you look at Novak Djokovic's diet, there's no raw food on it.

Liver is delicious if properly prepared before cooking. It needs to be steeped overnight in milk to get the residual blood out. That's what gives liver that metallic gamey flavour. Once the blood has been removed it's delicious.

Being a farmaioli I was raised on offal. MmmmmmmMm Gooood Eatin!

I always wonder if future generations are going to look back at this time period of people who had massive eating disorders and body dysmorphia ?

Vegan being at the top. It costs more resources to create that type of food for a privileged part of society that can afford to eat that way.

2nd on the list will be bodybuilders. They train so hard to eat and workout then they start cutting right before a competition. I won’t even touch the steroid use topic.

Then they all die young.

it will he really interesting to see if future generations label them both as freaks with massive body issues.

True dat. Cooking food is one of the main factors in why human brains developed allegedly. Less time and energy spent on digestion, thus more time and energy to think.
Although we seem to have come full circle. Obesity wise.
