Got selected and did the trial about 15 yrs ago and been "lucky " to receive notice 5 times since. I'm like WTF, however have not been selected since. Last one I was supposed to show up and got sick, did the self check online for covid and was told next time.
The options in Ontario are limited, specifically the list of disabilities is what I was referring to. The first time I received the paperwork that list was very short. I submitted the paperwork and a month or 2 later received a second letter saying my services wouldn't be required. The second time I received a jury duty notification the disability list was significantly expanded and if you checked yes for some of the disabilities listed, then you were automatically removed from the jury duty list.
Not certain if anything's changed but I haven't received any jury notifications since then.

Well, being called for a 3 month murder trial can effectively wreck one's career or business. So I sympathize.
As I said, we are probably close to juries being abolished in Ontario.
I wouldn't want my freedom to be determined by people too stupid to be able to get out of jury duty
Fill it out and send it in, the Leafs have a better chance of winning the cup than you being selected for jury duty. If you get to the point of why you can't do jury duty tell the judge you are seeing escorts and it affects your judgment of being impartial.

There was a comic a few years ago saying that if he was in court he would demand the trial be in French. And then when they were about to proceed, he would demand a translator because he only spoke English.
"I hear all those voices on Fux news" would also work. Offer the opinion that the defendant is a pedophile, even if the issue being tried is a real estate transaction. Hum to yourself a lot...
I did it all by the book the first time I got that notice. Went in on the day they instructed me to then spent the next few days sitting around reading books and watching movies on a portable DVD player (which tells you it was a while ago!). Then they sent us home for good midweek as it sounded like there weren't any trials needing juries that week. It was a nice little break from the office, actually. But as the veterans around the room said that week, once they have you, you should expect to hear from them every 3 years. And COVID era aside, they were right! But every time I've been back since: no trials and sent home by the end of the day Monday.
I received one and there was an option that was like, do you have a physical or mental condition preventing you from jury duty?
And it said you don't need proof.
When I received a form like this in the mail, I wrote a letter and sent it back stating that I was self employed and working out of the country and could not afford to take time off to accommodate this request. Also mentioned I'll be retired by age 60 and they can circle back to me then when I have enough time to play along. Never heard back.
I must be in the minority here. I received the letter, filled it out honestly, was chosen to go in the jury pool and was selected for a drug trafficking trial which only lasted 5 days. It was a slow time for me so I was able to do it without much work consequences. It was a week before christmas several years ago and at the beginning of the trial, the judge told us that we would be paid an amount between this number and that number (don't remember the amounts) and that it was solely up to him where on that scale we would get paid. When it was over, he said that since it was close to xmas and he was in a good mood, we would get paid the maximum, plus 2 extra days. Compared to being at home and doing nothing, it was pretty cool. Got paid well and quickly and sat in on a trial as a juror. I think its neat if everyone tries it at least once. There was really good and interesting testimony and the deliberations were something to experience. Funny how you might think its a slam dunk one way and then listen to the perspective of others and have your opinion change. Even the judge's instructions make you wonder if your findings were true or not. All in all, a very educational experience.
I agree with you 100%. But their response, I once asked them that same question, is you have to prove you didn't receive. I said that's kind of dumb especially if I didn't know I had one sent to me. Their response was; "sorry but that's just the way it is".

It's the opposite down here in NYS, if you show up, even if you don't see any actual jury duty they kick the can down the road so that you are out of the pool for 7 years...
