I start by prefacing by saying I am very much in favor of “we have to get tougher on crime”. I mean, crap I’m old enough to remember when joy rides got more than a slap on the wrist.

However, are we prepared for the cost? . Jails across the country are bursting at capacity as is, with our soft on crime justice system and revolving door bail system. Something Pierre and the right don’t want to discuss is that longer sentences and stiffer bail directly equates to needing more beds, more food, more medicine, more staff, more Drs, more nurses, more mental staff, more social workers…These days the faster they are released the faster a bed opens up.

it’s one thing for those of us who believe kids and offenders are “entitled” and “enabled” these days. It’s another thing to pony up the tax dollars getting tougher will require

No budget increase - have more criminals sharing cells or have smaller cells, smaller portions of food for prisoners and no luxury food like meat and less luxuries like gyms, tv's, pop corn/movie nights, music lessons etc.

I’m not sure you understand some dynamics or some realities. In fact I know you don’t. Please understand that’s ok, and is most certainly not a slight by me towards you.

can and will say, we tax payers are already paying millions in lawsuits over conditions. And while money would be saved by reducing lawsuits, no where near enoughto offset the cost of what the tough on crime proponents want.

Decided, maybe against my better judgement to add just a wee dose of reality.

forget about “them”, what about all those that work in them? Presently, these days all across Canada RNs, RPNs, are burning out at alarming rates. Emergency wards are over flowing to the point people and ambulances are being turned away. It’s not unheard of for people that work there to work 120-160hrs per two weeks. As is, today…..

want to add more, keep them longer? Make conditions (already deplorable) worse? You’re just asking for more violence, riots, assaults for those that work there. Where PTSD rates are over 30%….already…

me? While I am generally left of center, I blame former liberal governments and the electorate for monetary problems. But at the same time, I’d love to own a Lamborghini, hummer, and my own tropical island ( tougher on crime and yep I would, I hate our bleeding heart stance) Doesn’t mean it’s financially Feasible. Not with out a big increase in revenue (taxes). So the question is, do you really want it….

I appreciate the way you wrote this...I just don't see why criminals get treated so well in jails. Anyway, I appreciate your pov and knowledge on the subject

I guess in some ways it depends on the definition of “treated well”. And I guess it depends on who gets to write that definition.

If it’s not obvious, obviously I have some kernel of an idea what things are actually like. Will say, when it comes to our justice system, there’s a lot the public doesn’t know, doesn’t want to know. We are generally pretty soft snowflakes. And we like unpleasant things kept in the dark.

A GPS tracking anklet, restrictions on internet use, movement, who they can associate with, mandated community service, anger management and civics courses is probably a far cheaper and effective way to handle things. And as a deterrent.

And if she is charged, not even a slap on the wrist.
And they wonder why crime is outta control.
Lock the stupid kid up for a few months, or r send her to work in the factory where the firework were made without pay for a year, hopefully it’s somewhere in the third world.
