That's always been the "problem " with Trump. He'd take any question and answer as he sees it for as long as it takes, not as his handlers want him to answer. It has caused him many problems with the establishment media. Incidentally, it is what propelled him to the top of the Republican ticket.
This is somewhat true.
The fact Trump will happily lie and contradict himself based on his audience was a big part of what made him popular.
He would not answer, contradict himself, make shit up and so on -- this let lots of people project what they wanted to see on him.
The old school Republicans liked to dog whistle to the base and then give themselves room to hedge on following through.
Trump would just say the quiet parts out loud because that is what the crowd wanted to hear.
He didn't care whether or not he could do it or if it would be good.
Follow through was a problem for later.
Town halls are pretty good for Trump if he has a good sense of the kind of crowd it is, since he will just tell them what they want to hear and any fact checking can be shouted down as fake and wrong.
