Does anybody here practice jiu-jitsu?

I'm considering joining a club.

not to fight in tournaments but for fitness and self defense

I'm 58 but some girls tell me I look much younger, the more I pay the younger they say I look :)

how old is too old to start?

would love to hear from someone who is active in this martial art.

which club would you recommend?

The answer lies in your question grasshopper. Keep paying them more money.

I used to train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It’s a great sport for fitness, cardio, and self defense.

Some sports you can kind of take a breather when the action doesn’t involve you, but when you’re grappling, it’s non-stop motion. It’s a great work out.

It’s also very cerebral, because you’re always thinking, reacting, and setting up your opponent.

I prefer the No gi version, because it’s more realistic to what you may experience in real life.

In addition to BJJ, I also suggest you complement it with Muay Thai. Muay Thai teaches efficient and effective striking and kicking using your fists, elbows, knees, and shins/feet. It’s good to have both stand up game as well as grappling.

Most mixed martial arts places offer both and there are a ton of gyms and studios around the GTA. You don’t have to be too picky unless you want to compete.

Great reply Richard, thank you!

My understanding is that gi and nogi sessions are offered by the same club on different days right?

Did you actually see older people join and last more than couple of months?

Adding Muay Thai sounds great but that might be a little too ambitious for an old fart like me :)

I also heard that there is a pretty high injury rate in Jiu Jitsu, is that your experience too?

Thanks again!

So you're posting on a board dedicated to men rolling around with women for fun to ask where you could pay to roll around with some men for fun instead? Just asking is all....

You're just begging for him to kill your dog, aren't you?
Your post just made me realize that I myself seem to spend an inordinate amount of time rolling around with men as well. Oh, the pain when trying to be funny ironically bites you in the ass! Lol!

Yes, most academies offer both gi and No gi. However, in gi, you’re training a lot in grip and utilizing your opponents clothing.

No gi uses a lot of wrestling type take downs.

Most sparring is done at 60 - 70% effort. You’re really not trying to injure your partner. When you’re in the process of being submitted, you tap out. No one is going to break your arm or knee.

You can always take beginner classes for both Muay Thai and BJJ. Muay Thai is very practical and efficient. Its strikes and kicks are brutally simple. You don’t have katas or patterns. Just learn the right techniques and form and you’re good.

I'm absolutely knackered from my French self-defence class last night. I've never run so far in all my life.

Nothing beats Krav Maga for real self defence in dangerous situations. I think jiu-jitsu and other martial "arts" require more advanced training and continued practice to be effective in real world situations.

Like smart bombs or photoshopped pics faking broken windows when anything that can break glass should also level the entire building?;)

I learned some Krav Maga at the place I linked to. I didn't look on YouTube to find a scrawny little boy self-described as an Armchair Violence critic to find someone who says it doesn't. 🤷‍♂️ It's dirty street fighting designed to smash and run away. Not get into a wrestling match with street people. A well trained martial artist is a superior fighter no doubt.

Go ahead and learn jiu jitsu. Great exercise and discipline too.

Jiu-jitsu, aikido, judo are great for self defense, but they require getting your hands dirty. I boxed all through my early age and learned kick boxing, eventually and those have three great advantages. 1) the workout is grueling. You really get in shape. 2) you learn to get hit and deal with pain. 3) if you're even semi competent, you can put down almost any non boxer before the conflict even starts. Oh, I've never practiced jiu-jitsu, but I worked out for a couple of years with a friend of mine who was an aikido instructor, and it's something else to see how effective that is.

I heard that about boxing too, that it's probably the quickest way to learn real self defense and like you said in point #2 when you spar you actually get hit, that's priceless experience.

I think it's Mike Tyson who said: "your plans change when you get hit in the face" :)

like RichardG2020 sugested (who btw. is the only person so far in this thread who actually took Jiu Jitsu) adding Muay Thai would be overall best self defense.

😆 I love your optimism....but you're waaay too old for Muay Thai, as am I. The bone on bone contact is very, very, very painful and can be very harmful. I actually tried it when I was kick boxing- we shared a space with those nuts. Not a nice way to spend an evening. I encourage you to research aikido because of your age.

i know man,

that's why I said earlier that Muay Thai was too "ambitious" for me 😄

there are also 2 problems with boxing or punching as I see it

1) if you punch the wrong place like anywhere on the skull (accidently) you can break bones in your hand. it acctually hapened to me when i was a kid. not fun

2) you knock the guy out and he falls and hits his head on the paivement or sidewalk ledge, he can DIE.

I dont want to kill anyone, just choke them out 😊

if I was boxing someone I would probably go for a liver shot 🤮

I also know that in real life or deth situation the best punch would be to the throat, game over if you can do it

I just find Jiu Jitsu as an elegant and coordinate set of moves, looks great when someone does it well

or maybe I'm turning gay from all the transitioning going on nowdays and just want to roll with men
