I hold the Leafs in disdain but I don't despise them. I DESPISE BARCELONA FC, degenerate whiners always looking to influence the referee in their favour. Compared to them, Real Madrid are a class act. Barca fans attempted to intimidate Inter fans, allowing only 600 of them into Camp Nu. Compare that to Barca fans getting 1/4 of the seatings at San Siro. Argentina showed their class after winning the Slaughterhouse WC, I DESPISE MESSI. 6500 South Asians died in the construction of the Qatar WC, the death toll among Africans has yet to be announced.

Like Erling Haaland and Victor Osimhen, Roberta Lewandowski became another victim of THE BEAST...and I like all three players. Francesco (The Beast) Acerbi, from twice cancer survivor to the most feared defender in the world.

Cool

The same feelings I have for TML are the same you have for FCB.

I must say that you nailed RMFC dead on with your prose: "degenerate whiners always looking to influence the referee in their favour"

Fuck'n Bassett, he could have turfed out Ballard and Smythe, but didn't.
Ballard was Trump before Trump.

The aim was to fend off Jack Kent Cooke from taking over TML, that's what Conn Smythe wanted, he considered his son an alcoholic idiot. That's a tragedy JKC's success with the Washington Redskins speaks for itself. If Ballard is Trump, does that make Richard Peddie, Marjorie Taylor Greene in drag.

Donato Draper explain this to me. Barcelona spent $143 million of money they don't have on player transfers. They have a line of credit from Goldman Sachs worth $550 million, they are not exactly angels of mercy. If Juventus are docked 15 points for creative booking, what should Barcelona get? Your beloved club will go bankrupt long before the Leafs ever will.

I remember everything they talked about in the documentary, there was nothing new.

I was glad when it happened that Yolanda got fucked over…she was a gold digger and didn’t deserve it.

... then you would also remember Ballard didn't want to spend money on scouts
Not that he didn't have scouts since that would just be rediculous but he didn't want to spend on scouts.
The doc eluded to that. The successful teams were spending on scouts and Ballard was asked why he didn't and he laughed it off.
He also hired Stellick so it would still be under Ballard's watch.

I'd just like to clear up any confusion here. It seems like you thought I was trying to be "disingenuous or coy" about my disdain for the TML. Let me apologize if I wasn't clear in the past: I DESPISE THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAVES (sic). As well as I despise the Atlanta Braves and Real Madrid FC. The joy at watching these three teams lose is equal to watching the teams I love win. What you call "Trolling" I just call joy. This joy for me has now lasted for 56 years and I sincerely hope for many more years to come. In regards to this thread, Ballard has a lot to do with that futility.

I know that your generation sees nothing wrong in terms of the using the word "Oriental" when referring to a human being instead of a lamp or a rug. Just like once upon a time "Jap" was used in the common vernacular. The term is still heard in films up to the 1980's. In 2016 Obama signed a bill eliminating the words "Negro" and "Oriental" from federal laws. That signing says a lot. It's totally your prerogative to use the word in your personal life, understandable. You see nothing wrong with it. Hopefully, with the humanity you have within you, you'll know that Asian people hear that word the same way Latinos hear the word "wetback" and you might excercise discretion and choose to not use the word in their presence. You don't have to take it from me. Hear it from an Asian person themselves:

His premise is wrong. Why does Oriental only apply to inanimate things? Who made up this rule? Where is it carved in stone? African can apply to people or things, i.e. African American. Why can't Oriental as well?

We've had prior discussions on this topic and since then, just about every Asian/Oriental I've met, I ask if the term Oriental is offensive. Not one has said that it is.

As per the Leafs, feel free to go ahead and despise as much as you want. It's your right. But once again, in the above post, you were very coy and feigning total ignorance of their past, which I've shown is false. As such that is an example of trolling.

Regardless, IMO, we've spent enough time derailing this thread and should allow it to carry on. (I know. I was the one that started the indiscretion.)

Shack, who did you think I was referring to when I talked about the guy who will end up scoring the most goals in NHL history? I was talking about Alex Ovechkin. Heard of him?

He is not wrong, he is absolutely correct. The term "Oriental" is dehumanizing to a person. I know you can't see that and never will. A lamp, a rug and a person are all the same to you. Not to them.

Thankfully, your generation becomes more extinct year after year until this won't be an issue anymore.

The term ‘Oriental’ is outdated, but is it racist? - Los Angeles Times (latimes.com)

Margaret Cho

As an Oriental, I am bemused. Apparently Asians are supposed to feel demeaned if someone refers to us as Orientals. But good luck finding a single Asian American who has ever had the word spat at them in anger. Most Asian Americans have had racist epithets hurled at them at one time or another: Chink, slant eye, gook, Nip, zipperhead. But Oriental isn’t in the canon.

And why should it be? Literally, it means of the Orient or of the East, as opposed to of the Occident or of the West. Last I checked, geographic origin is not a slur. If it were, it would be wrong to label people from Mississippi as Southerners.

Sure, you hold on to whatever you need to in an attempt to validate what you've been conditioned to believe all your life. It's understandable since it's been a lifetime in the making.

As you full well know, Margaret Cho is from San Francisco and seen as an "American" in Korean/Chinese/Japanese culture. Which she is. Very much in keeping with the same reception of Lucy Liu and Grace Park, lovely as they are. North American is their predominant culture since they do not live or work in Asia. I'm sure they're very respectful of their Asian roots. Cho was also tragically abused by her own uncle and another family member during her childhood. She most likely wants some distance from that. Kudos to her for facing it and helping others do so.

Regardless of what she said, you've made it clear that there is no difference to you between an "Oriental" lamp, rug or person.

Ludicrous conclusion. That's what happens when one fabricates their own definition.

Precisely the answer I expected.

It's not fabricated and it's not my definition.

What is the difference between Asian and Oriental?

The term oriental stands for things and people from the east, particularly east of Europe. It is a term coined by Europeans, to refer to the exotic and mysterious cultures and people from the East. The term is opposite of occidental that refers to things and people from the west.

However, human rights activists in America consider the term oriental to be a loaded word having bad connotations. They also consider the term to be Eurocentric.

People in America have this tendency to refer to people with slanted eyes as oriental. Though such people belong to Asian countries such as China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, etc., not all Asian people have slanted eyes, in particular, people from the Indian subcontinent. There are huge cultural differences in people from different parts of Asia.

However, it is better to refer to people from this continent as Asians rather than oriental, which is a term that should be used to refer to things form East such as rugs and carpets.

Yeah and one of the participants is quite is quite vociferous about another member on here who he accuses of doing the same thing. Hypocritical but highly entertaining at the same time.
Criticism accepted.

I am still in awe of his ability to derail threads and never admit it. LOL. I'm an amateur.

Indeed, I'm guilty of assuming that people are hoping to be the best that they can be. Not so. Sad but true. As the classic adage goes:

“Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.”

Can't argue with that. Imagine if Leafs traded Marner for a Kordic type. Ryan Reaves would be the modern day Kordic.
(click red links for stats):

On October 16, 1989, six months before Ballard's death, the Leafs acquired Tom Kurvers from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a 1991 1st Round draft pick. A year and a half later, Kurvers was traded to the Canucks for Brian Bradley, and a year and a half after that, Bradley was selected by the Lightning in the 1992 Expansion Draft.

The Devils used the pick, (#3), to select a Defenseman from the Kamloops Blazers named Scott Niedermayer.

I met Ballard as he was meeting fans

I told him what I thought

I politely told him he was an incompetent meglomaniac surrounded by syncophants

He gave me a power stare reserved for such prople when confronted and told his guard to get rid of me

He was one of those sad people that get to control people

Very much like Trump who only tolerates ass kissers
