These poor, reluctant Russian citizens are being sent to their deaths.
The core of the failure Russia is due in a huge part to systemic corruption. From theft and fraud in procurement right down to forcing humans to go to war unless they can pay a bribe. Everything around and in between this is a bigger story that may be incomprehensible.

They might be used to it. There's an old Second City skit from the 80's which parodied Russian TV and there was similar bombast and threats.
Plus they're always told that "supreme great Russian country is always to win like superhero persons!"
But they are not isolated like the North Koreans, or for that matter the Germans before the age of cheap international phone calls and the internet [which is apparently really really great for porn]
Even during the Soviet era they knew better as seen with their jokes.
