It's good to see after 2 years of lockdowns some restaurants are making a comeback even though at inflated prices, there are people who are willing to pay these prices. Alo on Spadina is fully booked most nights, they take online reservations.

I managed to get a booking at Alo next month and I'm really looking forward to it.

I love to eat, but I'd never spend $680 on a meal.
I wouldn't live like this on a regular basis, but I'm in the third act of a three act play and I'm looking for experiences. I had a chance to go to the top rated restaurant in the world a few years ago. 11 very small courses was just the right amount of food. A "whale" might have been hungry after. I went for the experience. I had never experienced a 5 star restaurant. I didn't love every course, but nothing was bad and each dish was highly creative. On top of that, our server was devoted only to my partner and me. She and I were both blown away by the exquisite level of service, plus it was the highest rated restaurant in the world at the time. I can now scratch that off the bucket list.

My bucket list includes dining at a Michelin Star place.

I've been to Alo twice, and I've been to French Laundry (3 Michelin Stars) a few times. Neither of them is anywhere near $680 for a meal (excluding drinks).

I don't understand how you "have an experience" at a restaurant?
Swimming with sharks or manta rays, that's an experience. Something that gets your heart beating. Where you look back and people say " wow, that's so cool. What was it like?" How do you get that from a over priced meal?

FWIW, a "whale" is a rich sucker, he doesn't necessarily have a big stomach ;)

Eating at a 5 star restaurant is an ego trip and bragging rights for many.
The freaking steak that is served comes from the same market a 2 star restaurant buys them.
Yes, fancy table cloth, cloth napkins and silverware along with sweet talking wait staff and show.
Been to 5 star and 2 star, prefer a 2 star saves me money and the aggravation of the wait staff.
No different in taste in a medium cooked 8 oz filet with a baked potato.

It’s an amazing experience eating high end with a group of friends. Every dish served with a story and paired with perfect wine.

You’d have to be a foodie to appreciate it and it’s best done on the company expense account 😜

Different things excite different people. Just on this board you can see how many guys have such varied tastes in women. It's tough to criticize somebody for their tastes.

I don't see it as a criticism. Its personal opinion.
Experience to me is good or bad
Taste to me is did it smell good and sweet, or was it smelling like tuna boat.
None of us will agree with each other.

I have managed a few restaurants. While I appreciate a five star, I have no desire to go myself, at least not as a bucket list item. But good on you. If that is your thing, I totally respect it.

I want to hit 3 Downtown Jazz clubs before the year is up. (I’m in Niagara, so it’s a day trip each time).

As for my bucket list, I played live this year for the first time. If I can find the right 3 piece, I want to play one of the Jazz clubs. Just once. That would be an experience.

I love the Toronto food scene. So many diverse dishes from all over the world.

But, it only goes so far in terms of caliber. If I’m going to eat at a Michelin star restaurant it’s not going to be in Toronto with its brutalist architecture. For “the experience” it will be in the french alps or in the heart of London or Hong Kong, Tokyo etc. I had a meal so powerful from Charlie Fung in a private dinner in Central America that it took me to my dead grandmothers kitchen 40 yrs past. That’s the kind of experience I want if I’m going to lay out that kind of $.

Sounds snobby but if you want to sell people on “the experience “ it isn’t going to be in North America,

NYC doesn’t cut it either. Mayyyybe one place in LA but naw, I’ll take my comfort food in Toronto from family cooked Mexican to Jamaican patty’s and save my pennies for Europe or Asia.
