Roger Waters Says He’s ‘Far, Far, Far More Important’ Than the Weeknd and Drake

Former Pink Floyd rocker admonishes Canadian press for opting to cover After Hours Til Dawn kickoff over his own Toronto concert

Roger Waters threw shade at both the Weeknd and Drake after the former Pink Floyd rocker found himself overshadowed in the Canadian press by the two hometown artists.

Waters’ This Is Not a Drill Tour rolled into Toronto on July 8, the same day the Weeknd’s After Hours Til Dawn trek was set to kick off in the city. While the Weeknd’s gig at the Rogers Centre was ultimately postponed due to Canada-wide power issue, Waters’ show at Scotiabank Arena somehow still proceeded as scheduled.

However, in an interview with Canadian newspaper the Globe and Mail, the always-truculent Waters expressed anger that the Canadian press — and specifically the reporter he was interviewing with — opted to cover the Weeknd kicking off his tour in his hometown stadium rather than Waters’ show, which was the first of a two-night stand at the Toronto arena.
“I have no idea what or who the Weeknd is, because I don’t listen to much music,” Waters said. “People have told me he’s a big act. Well, good luck to him. I’ve got nothing against him. Would it not have been possible to review his show one night and my show another night?”

He added, “I’m not trying to make a personal attack. I’m just saying it seemed odd.”

Then, for reasons unknown other than he was in Toronto, Waters also took aim at the city’s native superstar Drake.

“By the way, with all due respect to the Weeknd or Drake or any of them, I am far, far, far more important than any of them will ever be, however many billions of streams they’ve got,” Waters said. “There is stuff going on here that is fundamentally important to all of our lives.”

It is unclear by which metric Waters measures importance. Thankfully for Waters, other than a close call next week in Chicago, the This Is Not a Drill Tour won’t cross paths with the spectacular After Hours Til Dawn tour for the remainder of the two treks.

I would venture to say that most people under the age of 40 would have no idea who Roger Waters is.
That’s how important he is.
Streaming services say Otherwise. Classic rock still accounts for almost 70% of all streamed content. And there were many many people under 40 at the concert.

I like classic rock myself, and I enjoyed Pink Floyd‘s music. However I still believe most people under the age of 40 would not know who he was.
I asked my two sons who are in their 20s and they had no idea who he was. I thought that my older son might know who he was since he is a fan of a lot of music from that era but he did not.

Whoa. From what I've seen, Hip-hop/RnB is the most streamed genre.

I enjoyed the music he made with Pink Floyd and some of his solo music was okay.

Not a fan when he rides the political and/or condescending train as he comes across as a pompous and obnoxious ass.

The rest of the band have not used their fame from Pink Floyd as a soap box and I respect them (and any other musician) for preferring to be known/remembered for their music, not their political views.

50 years on and Pink Floyd still sell millions of records and t shirts and are played on radio world wide. Time will tell if Drake, Weeknd and Beiber have that kind of staying power.

I don't know. It's kind of subjective. I'm very familiar with Rap/RnB and can say Drake is very influential.

Drake is like God to these younger kids.
You could have a point because I really don't know about Drake.
Also, I never cared much for Roger's solo stuff but then again I did not give it much of a chance.

Waters is light years more important than Drake and the Weekend combined. 100 years from now, if humans will still exist they will be listening to Pink Floyd and noone will be listening to Drake or the Weekend.

But Waters comes across as a teenager when he says such stupid shit. I love his music, been listening to Floyd for decades but I'm quite certain he is an insufferable prick.

The Wall has aged badly, apart from the Another Brick in the Wall Medley, it's painfully boring. Ozzy Osbourne is more important than Roger Waters.
