There are too many stigma against the trades. What do kids see on TV growing up? They see doctors and lawyers looking sexy and successful. Little do they realize is that there are almost no nurses or paralegals on these shows. They are the ones doing the lions share of the work. Anyone that has had the misfortune of being in a hospital knows that doctors are no where to be found. The reality is that they only make brief guest appearances, say cryptic things, then disappear again.

Probably the last show that glorified the trades was the A-Team. Those guys demonstrated how skills and ingenuity could defeat any foe. They made working with tools and solving problems super cool. And there were hot girls on the show!

Yeah - once MacGyver came on TV and a guy with degrees in Chemistry and Physics was out there saving the world with a paperclip and a used tampon, no one was too interested in following in B.A. Baracus' footsteps....

Worth a watch…

“Is it really liberal to ask those who don’t go to college, and make less, to pay for those who do, and make more?”

I went to uni straight out of high school, so yeah, my experience doesn't quite fit that. I was forced to put my parents on my OSAP application, and my parents make a tidy sum, which really crimped me. Doesn't make sense either, since my parents didn't help pay my way. I basically got $1500 in OSAP per term, and $3000 on average from scholarships. But my tuition was $6800 per term, plus another ~$800 for textbooks, then $2200 for rent and utilities, plus about $2000 for car payments, maintenance and gas, $1000 for groceries, and a few other expenses besides.

All told, I think I figured out in my budget that my expenses amounted to $14,000 per 4 months, with only $4,500 of that being covered by OSAP and scholarships. I was making about $345 take-home from working 24 hours a week while attending university, which netted me $5,500 for the 4 months. That still left me $4K short every 4 months, which was covered by bank loans. Graduated with $32K of bank debt and just over $12K in OSAP. And that's for someone who received $25K worth of scholarships and worked 24 hours per week!

So I agree with you: I think it's best to have your kid work straight out of high school. Not only does this firm up the question of whether or not going to university is the right choice, but also helps them decide what program they want to pursue, and helps them do it financially.
I think, if parents have money, it is fare if their children are not getting need-based fellowship: they do not need it. If parents are able but not willing to pay for their children, why taxpayer should?

Because only the professors win. The professors still get their inflated salaries despite failing to create a motivating environment for learning.

Professors should have a portion of their salary based on student retention. Wouldn’t that clean up the Universities and Colleges!!
Just the opposite - it will provide incentives to pass all students. In fact, it is exactly what is going on now: Universities are paid based on the number of students, so, failing rate is ridiculously low (and the quality of education too).

So many poor students are drowning in debt and they can't even land a job out of school to pay enough off without the interest killing them
This generated a very interesting thread. How about one on what this country needs is free escort services:p...

What is it with people today? Everyone wants everything for free, free education, free drug plans, free dental plans, free daycare. Whatever happened to just looking after yourself and not having to pay higher taxes to look after other peoples problems.
You mean like the mess south of the 49th where people can't go.to the doctor because they can't afford it so they die at home ?

Pay your fair share, stop whining about your liberty, safety and security.
There are shit hole countries in this world, be thankful for what you have.
Pay by the inch ? Some are overpaid now.

theres only thousands of articles of how sex workers in Canada aren't safe from bully clients and violent ones

The criminalization of sex work makes the environment of sex workers' labour criminal by criminalizing relationships with clients and third parties and sex work income and workplaces,

When they decriminalize being an escort. That's when thousands more escorts will feel relieved. Don't worry goonies I do pay my taxes but I don't agree with having to have records of each clients name when my bread and butter could be criminally charged for simply making the transaction.

This country needs a mandatory high school course that teaches kids that NOTHING is actually free, and teaches them about the nature and levels of taxation, as well as the history of public borrowing in Canada at the Federal and Provincial levels of governments and its implications for future taxation and other economic impacts.

Then, maybe, we can stop hearing people advance demands for free stuff.

Thailand. Relatively speaking, its basically free.

Just watch out for the Ladyboys - with makeup and longish hair, it is near impossible to distinguish them from the cisgender females.

It doesn't matter how much or how you teach it to them. They are just born that way. Every country has NPC it's part of our legacy on earth.
