do you seriously think I should pay lots when the govt does nothing for my liberty security and safety?
Pay your fair share, stop whining about your liberty, safety and security.
There are shit hole countries in this world, be thankful for what you have.
Pay by the inch ? Some are overpaid now.

What is it with people today? Everyone wants everything for free, free education, free drug plans, free dental plans, free daycare. Whatever happened to just looking after yourself and not having to pay higher taxes to look after other peoples problems.
More power to those who want a free ride and can get it! Just tax and tax those who are working and get the Central Banks to print more money. This strategy seems to work unless Canada becomes a banana republic.

I have noticed that those who clamour for free everything are themselves among the most selfish and uncharitable ingrates in society who believe that the state and anyone with more wealth than them owes them a living. Socialism is the gospel of envy and unproducticity and fosters something far less than mediocrity.

I'd agree if Canada followed a path of some East Asian countries where tuition is lower, or even free if the area you're entering will actually translate to clear benefits to the economy. Liberal arts are great, but we need to encourage people in areas such as STEM and trades to bolster our economy. If you want money from the government, make your time at school an investment for society.

The average person has only 250.00 on their accounts. I see the receipts at ATM's, since I seem to be the only person to have decency to throw them out in the garbage when I get there.
I mean being such a lazy slob you can't put the receipt in the bin might also correlate with being trash in other parts of life too, such as finances.

"Free" seems to be a loosely used word in our society.
Even if education was free, there will be graduates who will complain about not
being able to find a job, therefore the government has to support them.

If you live in Canada, you are 100% accountable and responsible to report 100% of your income and pay the associated tax rate established for your income bracket. No exceptions based on personal political or policy views. You are not special in any way, nor any different from any other citizen. If you don't, you deserve and should accept and consequences that may come your way due to non-compliance.
While I agree with everything you have said here, the reality is that NOBODY who works in a cash industry declares all of their income. I believe it is the main reason that there is such a strong push for everyone to use debit/credit for all purchases. If the government can eliminate cash money the grey/black market will disappear. Not saying that illegal transactions won't take place but at least the government will be able to track it and tax it which is really all they truly care about.

College just waste of time, too many young people going these days, just go straight to work, learn skilled trade, start a business.

Its working for Norway, Finland, Sweden, Germany, France, and Denmark.
No it's not...Canada is better than those countries mentioned. Anybody who thinks it's great because it's free, it's not....note someone else is paying it for you...what's next? someone needs to pay for your housing and food too? oh wait...you can actually do that as well...

I don't necessarily disagree that university should be taxpayer-funded. However, a couple points:

1) It's not free. Someone is paying. So not only does it have to be worth it, but you'd have to be okay with that particular redistribution of wealth.
2) We have way more people going to university and college than we need to, for specializations we don't need. University has become a business where they invent programs that most people can't use to get a job. It's a trap.
3) If university were to be taxpayer-funded, it should be based on performance. Paying a flunky to get high and party is a disgusting waste of taxpayer money. Therefore the money should go into scholarships. Ones based on performance alone and no other factor (this'll never happen, because our government is too focused on sex, gender, race, identity issues).

Until 2+3 are addressed, I'm adamantly opposed to such a system.

You read other people's receipts? That's rather odd.

Yes, 2+3 is what is needed. And U.S is doing it: top U.S. school offer need-based scholarships (e.g., if your family earn less than $100K, your Harvard education is free, you can even get a stipend for food and board), but only top students can get there. Mid-range Universities compete for good students by offering them full-ride scholarship, What Canada needs is to INCREASE the base tuition (by 2-3 times), but offer top 25% students free tuition + stipend and the second 25% free tuition and no stipend, Let lazy asses who want to go to college top party pay for those who actually want to study.

I just stared doing it. They leave them in the slot. I'm curious to see. Why not?
For the same reason you do not stare in people's windows at night if their light is up and the drapes are not completely closed. It is just not polite.

Canada does have free tuition. It is called OSAP grants. Just have your kid work for a couple years after high school then apply for OSAP. Basically some kind of low paying part time or full-time job. (They will mature during these years - and pick a worthwhile program to study. Not something useless like fine arts or philosophy.) That way, they don't have to include your income in their OSAP application. OSAP will then give them a ton of grants for University or College. When they graduate, they will basically owe nothing.

I went to uni straight out of high school, so yeah, my experience doesn't quite fit that. I was forced to put my parents on my OSAP application, and my parents make a tidy sum, which really crimped me. Doesn't make sense either, since my parents didn't help pay my way. I basically got $1500 in OSAP per term, and $3000 on average from scholarships. But my tuition was $6800 per term, plus another ~$800 for textbooks, then $2200 for rent and utilities, plus about $2000 for car payments, maintenance and gas, $1000 for groceries, and a few other expenses besides.

All told, I think I figured out in my budget that my expenses amounted to $14,000 per 4 months, with only $4,500 of that being covered by OSAP and scholarships. I was making about $345 take-home from working 24 hours a week while attending university, which netted me $5,500 for the 4 months. That still left me $4K short every 4 months, which was covered by bank loans. Graduated with $32K of bank debt and just over $12K in OSAP. And that's for someone who received $25K worth of scholarships and worked 24 hours per week!

So I agree with you: I think it's best to have your kid work straight out of high school. Not only does this firm up the question of whether or not going to university is the right choice, but also helps them decide what program they want to pursue, and helps them do it financially.

Let’s make trade schools free. We need skills, not thrills.
Sorry, you wrote that wrong.

Should be "Let's make trade schools paid for by taxpayers via the government" (after setting up a nice juicy new bureaucracy with a few hundred new $100k -salaried-plus-fully- indexed pension employees).

There are too many stigma against the trades. What do kids see on TV growing up? They see doctors and lawyers looking sexy and successful. Little do they realize is that there are almost no nurses or paralegals on these shows. They are the ones doing the lions share of the work. Anyone that has had the misfortune of being in a hospital knows that doctors are no where to be found. The reality is that they only make brief guest appearances, say cryptic things, then disappear again.

Probably the last show that glorified the trades was the A-Team. Those guys demonstrated how skills and ingenuity could defeat any foe. They made working with tools and solving problems super cool. And there were hot girls on the show!

Lots of college dropouts, if would get worse if they were given free tuition…maybe some sort of rebate after graduating.

Because only the professors win. The professors still get their inflated salaries despite failing to create a motivating environment for learning.

Professors should have a portion of their salary based on student retention. Wouldn’t that clean up the Universities and Colleges!!
